Regatta Report by Uncle Al |
Fine comebacks lift Peter
and Alex Rahn to narrow victory over Schönborns,
Goldts and Towns in warm June Bug!!
The June Bug Regatta sailed
out of Fanshawe YC June 8-9 finally brought us some
seasonable weather. Sunshine, light to medium breezes
and temperatures in the low 20's let us wear shorts
and T-shirts for the first time in 2002 and 10 W crews
(11 counting our RC of Jens and Sharon Biskaborn
[W7663]) were out to take advantage of such
meteorological magnificence! And a very special dinner it was - not only for the food which was super as always, but since we were using this occasion to say "au revoir" to Marjorie and Derek Innes, longtime Fanshawe mainstays who have moved to Victoria, B.C. It was a fine evening but we will all miss Derek and Marjorie and the many things they did for us. Sunday brought us light but sailable winds - especially for Peter and Alex who came back to win both races. When Al could manage no better than a pair of 4ths, the Rahns took the Wayfarer division over Al and Dave by a single point. Only one point further back
was Rick Goldt who sailed with Sue on Saturday and
Aaron on Sunday, while series 4th went to Scott and
Grant Town another point back. The latter raced the
finale with Paul, Scott's 5-year-old crew-in-training.
Still taking it nice and easy
in a Wayfarer borrowed from the ailing John deBoer
were Ottawa's Frank Goulay and Lucy who tied at 17
points (one behind Len!) with Roger Shepherd and
Joanne Kumpf but took the tie breaker for series 6th.
Perhaps the happiest of a cheerful bunch of W's out there were the Moseleys: Robin, Rebecca and Sally, who had come all the way from west of Chicago to make the 2002 June Bug their first-ever racing experience. After a pair of Saturday races in which he sailed along a leg behind the fleet, Robin was beaming with delight as he pointed out that he had learned a lot in his first day of racing. And he put this learning to good use as he and his two daughters stayed right with the fleet in the two Sunday heats - no mean feat when you consider the disadvantage in speed created by sailing "three up"! Robin expects to bring his family to the Wind Bag Regatta where you too can meet Robin who is the excellent new web master of the USWA site (http://www.uswayfarer.org/)as well as being an exemplary W enthusiast! And last but definitely not least, congratulations to another web master (FYC: http://www.fyc.on.ca/) Jens Biskaborn, and his wife, Sharon (W7663) who gave up their racing to make their excellent debut as Race Officers - a major sacrifice when you consider that Jens and Sharon can usually only manage two W events per year - the June Bug and the Pumpkin. On behalf of the many sailors who enjoyed your great efforts, I thank you and your helpers very much, Jens and Sharon! |
