Marc's and Al's trip to the first Wayfarer Midwinters
plus sightseeing with our host, Bob Brown
admire the improvement: here is the old version of this page

Departure day: Friday 4 February 2000: SHADES and the good old 230,000 km. VW Golf are ...

... are ready to head for the warmer climes of Lake Eustis, Florida, almost 2000 km. away!

After leaving on Friday evening about 5 p.m., Marc and Al drove through wintry but dry weather to Windsor, crossed the bridge into Detroit and stopped at a hotel in the middle of nowhere in northern Ohio just after midnight but in time to catch the last half of the America's Cup race on ESPN 2. After our early breakfast, the good old Golf took us through fair weather until we stopped for the night in Chattanooga, TN (left) just north the Georgia.

our hosts, Bob and Joyce Brown

Our home away from home with Bob and Joyce was ...

... right on a little harbour ...

... on the south shore of Lake Eustis.
Guided Lakes Tour of the Dead River and the Dora Canal
The Dead Riverl is west of Bob's place.

Dead River, here we come!

a quick stop for gas and munchies at the local 'variety store' on the Dead River

Countless birds ...

... make the tall Dead River cypress trees their home.

And then it was on to the Dora Canal: note the sign that gives bearings to various destinations.

There's an interesting home right at the mouth of the Canal ...

... but very soon it's a jungle where civilization might never exist anywhere nearby!

Herons thrive in the Dora Canal and ...

... everywhere ...

... else!

Anhinga in the Dora Canal, and a Cormorant condo

the Dora Canal

not much in the way of alligator activity this far north in winter, but we got lucky and saw one

We have reached Lake Harris - looks like the alligator got Bob's chart
