The Wayfarer Midwinters of 2005

photos mostly by Richard Kinnie with a few by Uncle Al

Another starboard lift for Al and Marc as they near the windward mark ...
...

... and the offset mark for a second time, before Al ...
...

... heels the boat to windward with a flourish to help SHADES bear away.
...

Nick has moved into a solid second place as he and Joe ...
...

... start the brief offset leg in ...
...

... a nice puff and perfect from.
...

As Marc adds the spinnaker pole to the proceedings, Al continues to steer with his knees while encouraging ...
...

... the spinnaker to fill.
...

Al will move forward to the thwart as soon as possible since knee-steering
requires standing too far aft and is making SHADES' butt drag.
...

Nick has the tiller between his knees as he gets set to hoist the spinnaker, and ...
...

... Peter does likewise. Note how far aft this puts the helm and how the transom drags.
...

Barely past the offset mark, Frank and Peter already co-ordinate on a "chucker", a windward spi hoist that has the crew throw the loosely bundled spinnaker up and forward while the helm hoists - very quickly if he doesn't want a spinnaker-sized sea anchor. You can see why co-ordination is crucial here.

...

Success!
...

Frank adds the pole, et voilà!!
...

The spinnaker leaders have stretched their advantage quite a bit, but among the Non-Spinnakers,
it remains very close. Here, Gale (4106) gets that starboard lift near the mark and takes ...

... the Non-Spinnaker lead (4th place overall) back from Eddie (6751).
...

Jim Lingeman tacks for the mark, a very respectable 3rd among the white-sail group.
...

Flat water: perfect conditions for "shooting" the mark, as Geoff Edwards and Pat Reardon may ...
...

... have done here.
...

Joe and Brian follow ...
...

... in hot pursuit. Meanwhile, Jim has started his second run.
...

The view from SHADES half-way down the run: Peter (93) appears to be making serious inroads on Nick (pink spi) as ...
...

... he and Frank are getting  fresher puffs from the north shore.
...

The puff finally reaches Nick and Joe who ...
...

... correctly bear away to remain in the puff longer than they would by luffing up and sailing across the long, narrow streak of wind. Sam (red hull) seems to be luffing Joe (spinnaker at right) which may be fun but will probably lose him distance on the rest of the fleet.

...

One last shot before Marc gets antsy about Al standing too far aft with the camera,
while Marc has to steer while flying the chute. Ah, the tough life and abuse a crew has to suffer!
...

Robert Hart (10195) has closed the gap between him and Peter Hylen quite nicely on this beat.
...

Bob and Peter near the windward mark in good form, ahead of ...
...

... Ted and Donna.
