The Wayfarer
Midwinters of 2005 |
|
Robert and Tony (10195) start
their offset leg as Bob and Peter move off down the
run. |
|
Still trying to recover from
having to restart, Richard and Michele remain
determined, and have |
|
... Mike and Patricia who are
close behind as they finish the second windward leg
just ahead of ... |
|
... Morris and Andrew. |
|
Richard and Michele pop the
chute as Patricia (2959) takes the helm so that Mike
can prepare his spinny. |
|
(l to r) Richard/Michele,
Morris/Andrew, Mike with Patricia |
|
The ever-present Joe (l)
and Nick as seen by Uncle Al and Marc and the CWA
camera. |
|
And of course Peter and
Frank. |
|
Without the zoom lens, it's
not quite as scary. |
|
The next group comes sweeping
down, as the ... |
|
... Race Committe (David
Williams [l] and Sandy Sundberg) enjoy a
moment's peace |
|
Uncle Al and Marc have
covered Nick and Peter, even to the point of
slightly overlaying the finish line. Near the
finish, staying to windward and ahead (if possible!)
is a good way of "spending your lead" as Stuart
Walker used to put it. |
|
Oops! Looks like Al and Marc
have not understood the Sailing Instructions and are
... |
|
... sailing between the wrong
two marks. A surreptitious but urgent gesture from a
party on a spectator boat that shall remain nameless
but whom Marc and I remember with sincere thanks,
points us at the correct finish line. |
|
A quick zag and a zig, and SHADES
crosses the real finish line first. |
|
Nick
(far right) is about to pay the price for
not staying "between his nearest opponent and the
finish line". Just a couple of minutes ago, he
easily crossed Peter (93) and then inexplicably just
kept going. Here, he finally tacks (as does Gale),
only to discover that Peter will lay the finish line
and snatch away second place. ... |
|
Gale Shoemaker and Taylor
Arnold (4106), the Non-Spinnaker leaders are about
to |
|
But
Peter and Frank (l) are the real example to
us all here. Despite suffering all kinds of
challenges - from leaks to a broken tiller - they
never lost focus and nailed a beautiful second in
their borrowed boat with borrowed sails. Very well
done, guys!! One of the beauties of a Wayfarer is
that it is not overly sensitive to minor problems
like 100 pounds of water in the boat. ... |
|
Peter Rahn grins and grips
his duct-taped tiller as he crosses in second place. |
|
Nick and Joe had to be
content with a 3rd. |
|
And it was that
aforementioned 4th for Gale and Taylor. |
|
Marc!! Would you look at
this!!! That young whippersnapper, Taylor, never
stops hiking!! |
|
It was a solid 5th (2nd in
Non-Spinnaker) for ... |
|
... Eddie Kraft and John
Conrader. |
|
You can't see it here, but
Jim Lingeman is ... |
|
... in a close race with ... |
|
... Geoff Edwards, and with
Joe De Brincat coming in on port. |
