The Wayfarer Midwinters of 2005
Saturday: race 4 pics - 2
photos mostly by Richard Kinnie with a few by Uncle Al

A textbook spinnaker douse by Marc and Al: Al has kept the chute flying while Marc took off and stowed the pole. Now Marc stands forward of the windward jib sheet so that he can just stuff the spi on the floor in front of him without having it end up hanging all over the jib sheets the first time we tack, and will pull the spi down with about three hand-over-hand moves, pulling at an angle about half-way between luff and foot in order not to give either edge of the sail too much slack. Al, meanwhile, is steering with his knees and keeping some pressure on the halyard and leeward sheet to help ensure that neither the spi nor the leeward sheet will end up under the boat.

...

If you don't believe me, ask Peter and Frank!
...

Wayfarer Man (r) polishes off the last of the spinnaker just in time to get the jib over to leeward before it can become an unsightly problem.
...

Eek! Has Frank (l) detected a spinnaker problem here? These things happen especially easily when you're sailing a strange boat.

Quickie Rules Quiz:
Q1. If Peter (l)  should end up on a collision course with Richard (yellow hull) and Nick, who would have right of way?
A1: All three are on port tack, so Peter has right of way as the leeward boat.
Q2: What if Peter meets Richard and Nick while the latter are in the two-length zone? Would that change anything?
A2: No. Rule 18 (buoy room) applies only between the boats that are "about to round", and Peter is not.

The pack remains in close pursuit.

A nice, smooth rounding for Team Chick'n, just ahead of ...

... Nick (864) ...

... and Jim (2136).

Joe DeBrincat (1115) leads Robert Hart (10195) and ...
...

... Eddie Kraft (6751) to the leeward gate.

...

A neat move coming up for Robert Hart as he ...
...

... takes advantage of an opening left by Eddie, and ...
...

... moves on ...
...

... through. Both Robert and Eddie should be getting set to sit out in the puff they're about to get. And both could well afford to sheet their mains in more.
...

It took me this long to notice: Jim is sailing without (at least) his lower two battens - and is still doing very well!
...

Our ace Race Committee smiles for the camera.
...

A nice starboard lift for Robert and Tony.
...

Ooops! A tack into a lull for Robert, but never mind, there's a puff on its way. Off Robert's bow, Uncle Al is about to tack to leeward of three Scots, praying that (a) they won't roll him, and (b) he'll be able to lay the mark.
...

Success! Having decided that the left side of the run is getting better pressure, Marc and Al defend that side against ...
...

... second-place Peter Rahn (93), and ...
...

... Nick (864), and Richard (10139) and Jim (far right).
...

Peter gives the "closed" start/finish line a wide berth.
...

As will Nick (864).
