Seconds before the start
,,,

And they are ...
,,,

... off!!
,,,

Ted Benedict (991) has a great start, but reefed as he is, he'll be fighting an uphill battle!
,,,

Mike Murto tries to squeeze past the leeward-end mark boat without contact.
,,,

Mike Tighe and Jim Lingeman (2136) are well placed after a fine windward-end start but
seem to be knocked a bit. Butch Minson (3951) and Peter Hylen (2198) have bailed out onto port tack.
,,,

Joe and Brian De Brincat (1115) are pointing high but need to do something about the large backwind bubble in their main. Marc Bennett and Michele Parish (3854) are footing off for speed and Gale and Gary Shoemaker (4106) may have to foot off as well, if they want to keep Marc from taking their wind!
,,,

A classic battle of ...
,,,

... two very well trimmed boats!!
,,,

The knife edge between backwind and blanketing.
,,,

If one boat slows down even a little, it will be doomed (for the moment)!
,,,

The passing of the Chickin (10139, Richard Johnson with Uncle Al) seems to
have affected Gale (4106) more than Marc who is about to take Gale's wind.
,,,

Mike Murto (2959) bears away for the starboard boats, only to ...
,,,

... Marc (3854) tack inadvertently right about dead on ...
,,,

... Mike's wind. Note how quickly Marc and Michele get SHADES up to speed after the tack!
,,,

Actually, by footing off, Mike (2959) has managed to stay out of Marc's (3854) wind shadow, but Mike will now have to point higher or he'll lose touch with Marc completely. Our "rookies", Lou and Ben Karably choose an unfortunate place in which to ...
,,,

... tack. They will have two boats sitting right dead on their wind when they look up after their tack!
,,,

Make that three boats!! Race leader, Joe De Brincat (1115) has tacked right on Marc's wind. This leaves Marc with a tough
row to hoe: if he wishes to hold port tack, Marc must immediately foot off, but not so much as to fall into Mike's backwind!
,,,

With Mike helping by pointing rather low, Marc is managing to ...
,,,

... keep ...
,,,

... his wind clear!
,,,

Perhaps seeing better breeze off to the left, Marc tacks away. Note how the sheets are eased and will ...
,,,

... come in slowly as the boat regains maximum speed.
Absolutely flawless, slightly under-sheeted post-tack jib trim by Michele.

,,,

On the first run, Richard (10139) and Marc fight for second place behind ...

... Joe and Brian De Brincat.
