the 2011 Wayfarer Midwinters

...
Here are Richard and Michele, obviously laying the mark.
...

Jim (1066) tacked after crossing Richard leaving the latter to round 2nd. Had he tacked a smidgen to leeward and a length ahead, Jim could easily have laid the mark and rounded ahead of 10139. In the event of a knock, Jim could easily have "shot the mark" in these flat waters. So the tack to leeward and ahead was a pretty safe bet.
...

Meanwhile ...
...

... Jimmy Mac (1904) has fallen all the way to 4th as the Jims round. In the background, the SHADES spinnaker goes up.
...

Jim and Jim
...

And yet another Jim, Mr. Best, is about to round ...
...

... a reasonably close 5th. No tern left unstoned as Jim and Cynthia hoist the spi on the very short reach to the offset mark.
...

Mike Murto (2959) and Richard W. approach the mark as Richard and Michele spinnaker nicely off into the distance.
...

It was a very short offset leg indeed.
...

Richard  (re-done forestay and all) and Diane
...

Butch Minson and his wife, Janice, have left themselves some catching up to do.
...

Ted Benedict has beaten Jim Lingeman (3991) and his masthead flotation to this mark.   - click here for larger image
...

As have Izak Kielmovitch and Peter Hylen.
...

Camera angles are often deceiving. Jim (red hull) is actually well ahead of our Kansas newcomers.
Apparent mast height is a dead give-away.  - click here for larger image

Looking very nice is ...
...

... Wayward Wayfarer in the hands of Pat Bladwin and Ed Rojohn.
...

A major veer (clockwise shift in the wind direction) has made the run more of a reach and both Jim H (l) and Richard J have gained significantly after sailing well high of the rhumbline (straight line mark to mark) and getting the new better-angled breeze much sooner.
...

Complacency cost Al a fair bit here as he failed to keep enough of an eye on his closest pursuers and now ...
...

... Jim and Linda have occupied the desirable inside position for the leeward mark rounding. The 1904 Jims (r) have done amazingly well without a spinnaker!! Meanwhile, our very efficient RC has signalled a course change to make sure we get a good upwind leg coming up.
...

Jim and Linda do indeed have the inside position and the lead going onto beat #2.
...

As can be seen here, the top four boats were very close together at the leeward mark. Richard and Michele (yellow hull) will in fact ...
...

... round in 2nd place after getting the inside position on Al also. Meanwhile, Tony is learning the SHADES leeward mark routine:
1. cleat the jib in quickly to a slightly undersheeted position for the beat (see above)
2. take mainsheet from helm and bring it in rapidly using two hands rather than the helm's available complement of one hand and relinquish it to the helm about two seconds later once the main is most of the way in.
