As the outside boat, Al does have one defense: as leeward boat, he only has to give Richard room to round, i.e. just enough space to make a seamanlike rounding as opposed to space for the faster, wide-and-close tactical rounding. Thus Richard, having come in high, had to do a 135°+ turn in very short order, while Al could retain more speed by doing a more gradual turn. The result can be seen above.
...

5th-place Jim Best (red hull) is also still very much in the hunt.
...

Sheeting in this soon looks good cause the sails don't luff but is a killer since this oversheeting makes the sails stall out
and kills speed worse, far worse, than luffing does. The "Al method" described a few pics ago, is far more effective.
...

Richard (yellow hull) has been forced to tack out of Al's backwind and now has to choose whether to tack back or not.
And if so, before or after he passes through the disturbed air caused by the reaching boats.
...

Butch (3951) reaches the mark with Richard W (10423) and Ted in close pursuit.
...

And from way to leeward, Mike Murto (2959) with crew Andy doing a nifty, speedy douse, nips around ...
...

... just ahead of Ted (991) and Richard W.
...

A nice-looking rounding for Richard and Diane
...

Izak needs to use the Uncle Al mainsheet method.

Jim and Dean
...

The boys from Kansas put in a fine-looking ...
...

... rounding.
...

Our mark layers have been busy putting the yellow replacement mark into its new location and can now relax for a bit.
...

Letting Al (r) go uncovered, Jim and Linda have increased their lead slightly.
...

First around the new, yellow windward mark are Jim and Linda Heffernan with ...
...

... Uncle Al and Tony not far behind.
...

Richard J (10139) and Jimmy Mac (1904) have lost a bit of ground on this beat.
...

Tony and Al (3854) get mentally ready for a gybe set of their spinny.
...

A very nice set for Jim and Linda as Jim Best passes their bow on his way to the windward mark.
...

No big flaws in the SHADES hoist but ...
...

... Tony and Al agree that there is ...
...

... room for improvement. Then again, it is Tony's first time racing with Al's system.
...

Still very much in the race are Jimmy Mac (1904) and Richard J.
