Richard and Michele prepare to pop their chute.

No spinnaker for the 4th-place Jims. Looks like Jim Best (911) has backwind in his main: too little mast bend or jib oversheeted?
...

Al and Tony set off in pursuit of Jim and Linda.

Quick now! Who needs to keep clear here and why? Richard (l) or Butch (US3951)?
This is a simple case of port-starboard, Butch being on starboard, Richard on port. Even if Richard were on the other gybe and thus on starboard, he'd need to keep clear since in that kind of a situation, the close-hauled boat is always the leeward (i.e. right-of-way) boat.

Jim and Cynthia are around the windward mark in 5th place,

Spi up promptly for Jim and Cynthia

After their unpromising start, Jim Lingeman and Dean Grimes (3991) have moved all the way up to 6th place, just ahead of ...

... Butch and Janice Minson. In the background, Ted Benedict is nearing the windward mark.

Richard (10139) has been moving very well on this run and now gybes back towards the rhumbline where Al continues to chase Jim (r). It was a very sobering leg for Al and Tony as Jim and Linda continually pulled away from the SHADES team despite Tony's and Al's very best efforts. This marked two straight runs on which Tony and I had been badly outspeeded by Jim and Linda as well as, to a lesser degree, by Richard and Michele. Be that as it may, it was no surprise when the RC signalled a shortened course, given our belated start and the fact that the RC was eager to get at least three races in on this day. We finished in the order you see us above: 1st Jim and Linda Heffernan, 2nd Uncle Al and Tony Krauss, 3rd Richard Johnson and Michele.

Good non-spinnaker form for Jim Lingeman and Dean while Mike Murto and Andy Douma near the end of their beat.

Ted Benedict is next around, followed by ...

... Richard Watterson with ...

... Mike Murto right there, too.

Last year's Mike Murto crew, Izak Kielmovitch (3492) is giving his mentor a run for his money.

Pat and Ed just nicely ...

... lay the mark.

The Bests have the venerable W911 looking pretty nice but are hard pressed to stay ahead of the water leaking in
which may explain why Jim and Dean are still right there despite sailing "white sail". (Actually, Jim is sitting way too far aft!!)
