Race 4, the first run of a 2¾ course -well, 2½ really but when I had the quarter and three quarters waving to me in the "Common Symbols" department, I couldn't resist!! Note how fuzzy we look 'cause it's not a crystal clear day. (l to r) Butch, Richard J, Jim H

Today we have a gate at the end of our runs, because of the numerous (35) MCs.
Uncle Al and Tony have an upwind edge in today's winds since they each weigh around 200 lbs.
...

As can be seen above, they (3854) are not wasting their advantage. Here Richard looks to be about to gybe around the right-hand gate mark, which would not be the most efficient nor easiest of roundings: a windy gybe followed immediately by luffing up to close-hauled.

About the only thing I really recall about race 4 is Jim Best rudderless in the healthy pre-race 4 breezes, steering a dead run successfully through a bunch of MCs using a paddle/oar that reminded me of nothing so much as the leg and foot of the Daffy Duck on the transom (above) of Joe DeBrincat's Maltese Falcon. As I said in my report:
"And who could forget Jim and Cynthia Best who spent all Friday evening epoxying their transom (above) back to their W911 after their boat began to crack apart after a 30-year rest in storage! They no sooner made it out to the start area in the brisk breeze than their rudder started coming off. I could only watch in mute admiration as Jim stood in the back like a Venetian gondolier, steering a dead run through dozens of MC Scows with an oar that had a yellow plastic blade that reminded of nothing more than Daffy Duck's foot - while Cynthia shouted diminished capacity warnings to all and sundry. In the photo below, they are about to head out for race 5 and place an excellent 3rd. What a fine addition to our group!!!"

A borrowed rudder is soon fitted on? I think that's what was done?

Meanwhile Butch and Janice are starting what is likely the final beat of race 4.
They are in 3rd place, which they inherited after Richard and Michele capsized on the second spinnaker leg.

The Juniors are out there ...

Here comes Ted Benedict who has packed it in for the morning.

Is this a good fishing day? For egrets, it likely is, I guess.

Having finished race 4 in 3rd place, Janice Minson apparently has had enough and Butch is ...
