Butch will go back out and sail solo in race 5. A guy after my own heart!!

A capsized mariner or two aboard, a safety boat comes to shore to deliver.

What happened to the two Jims? I have now been enlightened:

Subject: saturday race at mids, the 2 jims

Hi Uncle Al;

The reason the 2 Jims had to come in on saturday was because they broke their centerboard when they tried to avoid an MC near the dock and the board got caught in the mud.  It is also how I got an excellent crew for sunday's racing; we did very well due in no small part to Jim M's great help and advice.  His comment to me was, "I'm not used to someone taking my advice."  He was also greatly impressed with the jib ticker window in my new sail and the quite useful trimming feedback it gives.

Wow!! Perfectly in time, Richard. Thanks for the help!! Did you like the caption about the shirt? As I said to Julia (mine) last night, I refrained from pointing out that the highlight of my 1979 honeymoon on Cape Cod was finding that same "Russ Burrell" shirt in Provincetown. I used to wear it to school under my sweatshirt to be able to flash the kiddies as required. I think it was in 1979 or 80 that we won North Bay and the North Bay Nugget wanted, as always, to capture the winners on film. Their photographer smiled and politely suggested I go change that shirt since they'd only have to air brush it out otherwise.

Best regards,

There are some rather squall-like gusts coming through.

Phew! Made it ...

... just in time!

Look at that nasty stuff out there!!

during race 5

The camera notices the bit of misty rain as Mary captures the action just after our start
before she takes the camera back to where it's dry.
...

Not to be discouraged, Richard Watterson has taken his paddle boat out to get a close-up look at the action.

Visible to the camera from this angle are Richard and Michele (10139 and recovered from their swim), Uncle Al (3854) and Pat (3473).

W2136 is today's new player, Tom McNally who is steering Mike Tighe's boat with the latter as crew. In race 4, they placed a fine 5th and in this race they will place 2nd to Uncle Al but managed to stay ahead of Jim and Cynthia Best, Jim and Linda H and Richard and Michele all of whom were notified of a final beat course change unlike the two race leaders, Al and Tom. Well done, Tom and Mike!!!

This pic conveys fairly well the rather breezy conditions in which, at the end of the first run in race 5 (I think!), Al pronged the left-hand gate mark after nearly capsizing during a rushed spi takedown that he left too late. The penalty turn was promptly and perhaps over-efficiently done as Al let go of the tiller for much of the procedure that involves a tack and a gybe while turning in the same direction. Al he always recommends, Al used mainsail trim to pivot the hull under the sails while keeping the boat well heeled to starboard to encourage his counter-clockwise turn. Tony and I had not discussed this eventuality, so I did the mainsail trim myself. We might have been better to do this manoeuvre with a bit less panache with me steering and Tony trimming but then again, I really needed him to back the jib to help us bear away violently after our tack. In any case, it was windy and the 200 (Imperial!) gallons of water or so that we shipped were sucked back out of the boat in fairly short order.
