Well we did it, we had the inaugural Midwinters West on Saturday, February 18. Lake Mission Viejo Yacht Club was one of the 27 venues for the Southern California Yachting Association 77th Annual Midwinter Regatta. More than 700 boats participated in about 60 one-design classes plus PHRF and Portsmouth handicap classes.

Weather is often an issue for these Midwinters. This year we had a fabulous warm spell in early February, 85°F one week before the Midwinters but then saw a deterioration as February 18th approached. Temperatures plummeted 25 degrees and rain moved in Friday night and continued into Saturday morning. Fortunately, things cleared up and we had a great day. We also had 10 Capri 14.2s including the National Champ, and 4 C-15s including the National Champ sharing Lake Mission Viejo with us.

The Wayfarer class had only three entries, but it's a start, and we had a great time. This was the first time we really competed against each other. Don Schaffner and wife Linda sailed W613, Frank Fournier and crew Bud Corning (a Larchmont Yacht Club member in NY)  sailed  W2300, and me and my wife, Audrey were in W2502. Frank used our old main, so in the photos he is in the boat with the red numbers on the sail and we are the black numbers. Congratulations to Don and Linda for their first place finish. All three boats showed good boat speed so Frank and I hope to give Don some competition in the many regattas on the schedule this year.

While we only had our three local boats, I had a big surprise at the dock as we were preparing to sail to the start line. A fellow came up and announced that he was from Canada and owned a Wayfarer. Unfortunately his boat was still at home, but he took the opportunity to check us out on his way to a business meeting in Palm Springs. Hopefully he will say a good word and we'll get a boat or two from Canada next year.

Best regards,

Rod Simenz
