Pictorial Report on Race #4 - part two

.....
The first reach brings the fleet past the Boulevard Club as Peter Rahn defends against Ryan and Al (red spi) while Heider (pink & white spi) will try to go through to leeward of Keith, and Dwight Aplevich holds a comfortable 6th. Again powered by Frank Goulay's gybing excellence, Uncle Al moved into the lead at the gybe mark. Al held his lead down the second reach but was closely pursued around the leeward mark by Peter Rahn, Heider and Ryan.
.....
Half way up the long second beat: After a sloppy leeward mark rounding, Al has failed to bring SHADES  to her top speed in increasing winds. Heider (6) and Peter (5631) are now virtually even with Al (mostly obscured by Peter). What a race!!!
.....
The winds are now over 15 knots as Heider and Al duel it out for #1. Al listened to Tom who invited Al to get off their case, saying that a luffing match would screw them both up. So Al bore off to try to surf through to leeward after making Heider suffer just a little bit longer.
.....
A few seconds later: Heider, Al and Peter sit 1-2-3 as they pass the RC boat, half way down the run.

The leaders: While Tom concentrates, Heider contemplates.
....
Bringing a puff from astern: (left to right) Dwight Aplevich, Peter Ayres with his patriotic Mike Mac spi, Stefan Larson and Ivan Pedersen.
.....
Right about here, Frank is telling Al: "For goodness' sake (or words to that effect!!), sail higher before we lose Peter!" So Al sailed higher - in time to preserve his edge over Peter, but too late to stay in touch with Heider who would round with a 50-metre lead.
.....
It's a close race between Ivan with Chris (7350) and Randy Park with Joanne Kumpf half way down the run.

At the finish line: Heider Funck and Tom Wharton (6) made no mistake up the final half-mile or so upwind to the finish as they finally beat Al (3854) and kept alive their hopes of winning this year's North American title. 3rd place went to Peter and Alex Rahn (middle) over Ryan Mahaffey with Alan Laderoute. Even though we somehow missed him in all the photos above, Hans Gottschling and Scott Moddle had easily their finest race of the series with a 5th ahead of their amazing TS&CC club mates, Keith Haill and Sam Hodder, whose 6th would turn out to be their drop race!!!
John and Dolores deBoer completed a fine come-back with a 7th over Roger and Carl Shepherd, while Dwight Aplevich and Al Nichols took a close 9th ahead of Randy Park and Joanne Kumpf.
