Saturday: Race #2 of the North Americans

A split second before the gun: This writing taking place over two months after the event, my recall is no longer what it should be. I seem to recall that this perfect start at the favoured end by Brian Jeffs and Scott Bamford didn't help them as they mistakenly thought they'd been recalled and went back to re-start. Uncle Al who wants to tack to go right is not in bad shape at the extreme left of the photo. The rest of the visible fleet is not likely to be chosen as an illustration of how to start well!
..
A few seconds after the start, the fleet begins to straighten away.
I seem to recall that it was Peter and Alex Rahn who rounded first onto the reaches with Scott Town, Brian Jeffs and Uncle Al in fairly close pursuit. Allowing the others to fight each other high of the rhumb line, Frank and Al held low and gybed into second place at the next mark. With lighter crews that were nicely able to keep the boats planing from time to time down the second reach, Peter Rahn and Uncle Al pulled away from the others down that reach.
..
Al and Frank (not visible here) had a bit of a tacking duel with Peter and Alex (5631)
and (I think) Al got by near the windward mark.
..
(l to r) Brian Jeffs, Roger Shepherd, Matt Princing, Mike Codd(?), Scott Town, Don Thwing
..
Uncle Al (3854) defends the inside against Peter Rahn as the leaders near the end of the run
and prepare for the final short beat to the finish.
..
Peter and Alex Rahn get the second-place beep.
In a closer race, finishing at the unfavoured end like they are doing would like have cost them!!
..
Slumped shoulders aboard Silver Fox, as John and Dolores deBoer spent all race going backwards through the fleet after a fine first beat. Later analysis came up with the theory that they should have checked for weeds on their foils!
..
Bob Frick and Peter Every cross at the right end in 9th - not bad for a couple of lightweights in their 70's!!!
..
Joe DeBrincat and Marwhil Gamit finish in a healthy gust. Looks as though they could use a bit more vang!
