The Wayfarer North Americans:
Race #1
photos by Alistair Martin, commentary by Uncle Al
Winds SE at 4 to 8 knots. It paid the bang the corners on the first beat.
Heider Funk and Tom Wharton (6, above) hit the port layline early as did Uncle Al but Heider got there faster and tacked on Al who tried to foot off through Heider's lee with the usual total lack of success.
..
Peter Ayres (above) went right and did OK also. At the end of the first beat, it was Heider Funk and Roger Shepherd rounding 1-2 with a nice little edge over Fred Black (?). Uncle Al rounded 4th or 5th after tacking to starboard just off Hans Gottschling's bow. Al was the first to notice that the leaders were sailing towards a TSCC club mark that was about 30º high of the actual gybe mark. This allowed Al to get back into the race as he gybed around just behind Heider and just in front of Roger.
The second reach saw a good battle between Heider and Al who moved away from Roger and the rest of the fleet as the latter hit a dead spot at the mark. The second beat turned out to be the final leg of the race as the RC shortened at the windward mark. Heider and Al went middle right as they engaged in a tacking duel, what with the rest of the fleet being well back. Heider was still protecting a very slight lead as he approached the finish line on starboard when Roger rolled in from the far left corner and looked like he might cross both Heider and Al on his lifted port tack.
But Roger's lift ran out about 100 m. from the finish and in the end it was Heider, Al and Roger finishing 1-2-3 within 5 seconds of each other! In 4th place it was Hans Gottschling edging out the single-handed Fred Black, while Paul Taylor took 6th ahead of John Cawthorne.
