the 2003 Wayfarer North Americans

At 0815, the parking lot at MSC is already alive with Wayfarers.
...

Nick (l) and Marc have replaced their suspect centreboard.
...

An hour before the scheduled start of race 4, we're out there waiting to go in a light NE wind that may well disappear soon if the slight traces of thermal lift above the shore are any indicator.
...

Displeased with the pointing they got out of Al's sails yesterday, Al and Frank are trying out a spare suit of Tom's where the main at least, is much newer than Al's main that has seen 10 years of very hard use. A brief tune-up sail bodes ill for this combo but it's too late now to go back and borrow the new suit of Doyle sails that Nick had offered to us.
...

Richard and Jim tune up a bit.
They have borrowed an Uncle Al spinnaker for the racing today.
...

Today, Marc has pinged the mast aboard 864, and everything is all set as the Race 4 start sequence is begun - everything except ...
...

... the wind, that is. It doesn't look good for racing today as a postponement is made. There is some thermal lift building on shore but the long-distance travellers: Richard and Jim in 10139 from Charlotte, NC; Tony Krauss and Mary Abel from Cleveland (10140) and Peter and Alex Rahn from Montreal, wisely decide to opt for an early start to a long, hot drive home.
...

But it's an ill wind that blows no one good: the postponement gives the team from SHADES (left) the chance to beg a run ashore to switch sails. Uncle Al even got a chance to skinny dip while awaiting Frank's return. At this point, things are looking up as Al can feel the air beginning to move towards shore on his bare skin. In the end, Frank came back with Nick's jib but our own trusty old main since Nick's main had no battens.
...

Significant thermal lift over the shore is creating the beginnings of a lake breeze. No sign of ripples as yet but but the sails are beginning to fill with some SW breeze.
...

Two happy sailors, David Platt (l) and Peter Seet enjoy the building breeze.
...

Hey! Actual ripples, and the mark boat gets set to place the start pin
- and it's only 11:20 a.m.
