race 3 part 2 Photos by Joanne Kumpf |

After a series of nearly
flawless roll tacks in a tacking duel with Heider, Uncle Al rounded
onto the final run with a semi-comfortable lead which he split between

between Heider and the gate. Paul continues to hold a comfortable 3rd. ... |
The photographer appears to
have inadvertently selected aperture priority for the past couple of
shots. Above, we have Richard on his way to a fine 7th while the
spinnaker-less Tony will fall all the way to 14th.

It's nearly 3 p.m. and the lake
effect breeze begins to flag, forcing Dwight Aplevich and Al Nichols (r)
to work hard to keep their spinnaker filled. ... |
Likewise Doug and

John Weakley: portrait of a
PRO. In the background we can see the 1-2 boats: Al and Heider. Note
how perfectly Al is positioned between Heider and the finish line. ... |
A flagging flag in dying winds. ... |
No picture of Al's moment of
glory that got him back into the series, nor of Heider's 2nd-place
finish. But here Joanne experiments and just gets Paul Laderoute about
to finish 3rd - plus an unexpected partial self-portrait.

Richard and Jim keep Free
Range Chickin moving very well in the light stuff and place 7th. ... |
It's close but Doug Netherton
takes 8th ahead of Nick Seraphinoff whose three straight 9ths with a
new mast and lovely Mike Mac sails caused some serious soul searching
to be done over beers that evening between Marc and Nick. The
conclusion was that (a) the mast should have been "pinged" to encourage
some bend, and (b) Nick's centerboard was too thin. Fortunately,
Richard had brought back the board borrowed from Al, so a better board
was available. Sure enough, Marc and Nick got up an hour early on
Sunday to switch boards and the result was a fine 3rd!

Very little wind left now as
Mike Codd and George Blanchard ghost across in 10th. ... |
13th for Kit and Gord (l)
who could heel their boat a bit to decrease wetted surface but whose
sail trim is exemplary. ... |
Mary and Tony could also heel
their boat to good effect. |
