This
picture shows
the value of defending the left side of a buoys to
port run (all else
being equal!). With the mark rapidly approaching, Mark
(7673) - inside
and on starboard - is in control. Roger (7700) will
have to put off a
gybe to port and towards the mark until Mark gybes.
With the mark only
about 100 yards away, Nick will end up stuck on the
outside unless he
can sail higher, plane, and sneak across both 7673's
and 7700's bows
which is doubtful and risky. A great sneaky move for
Nick in this
position would be to luff up hard and cut across the
starboard tackers'
transoms. If the mark is already only a few seconds
away, Nick should
douse the chute rapidly here and then go up. If there
is some distance
still to sail, Nick wants to luff up as much as
needed, luffing the
chute for a few seconds, if necessary. This would put
him on the inside
and might well lead to an overlap since Nick could
blanket the other
two when they gybe.
