Saturday pics: race 3, part 1

The wind continues to pick up as we ...

... wait for race 3.

Scott (l) and Brian looking fast!

The start of race 3. Al still wants the left side of the beat but has played it safer by starting ...
...

... just to leeward and ahead of Brian (9235). Roger (7700) also looks good but ...
...

... may have problems if the expected starboard knock arrives - as it seems to be doing here? A bit late for the line is Nick (864), but not as late of Mark and Paul Taylor who have been wrestling with spinnaker pole issues somewhere south of East Tawas.

Great hiking by Sean Ring! Er, Mike. With the vang (and the main leech!!) this loose,
you may be able to sail flat with ease, but you won't point!
...

Mike must have heard me - he's cranking on some vang as an interested Sean looks on
- or is Sean just making sure he is perfectly placed to keep the spray off his helm???
...

Didn't we see this same pic in the race 1 coverage: Nick roaring in along the port layline?
...

A starboard lift late in the beat, leaves Mark (l) with some hope for catching up, while Al (off Mark's jib) looks bad,
being on the outside of the lifted Brian (centre) and Roger (r).

But in the end, it's Brian (9235) and Al rounding ...
...

... one-two. Above, Al again protects the left. In the ever increasing winds, Al and Frank have discovered that things are much more relaxing and the boats far easier to control if they keep their weight well aft on the run, and that does not seem to be hurting their speed any.

Nick and Joe give the folks at the State Park a good show.

Invasion with lighthouse.

Even without a spinnaker, it's still an exciting ride for Mark (7673) and Mike (4271). The former have no pole.
...

Al and Frank (3854) sit patiently off Brian's leeward quarter, knowing that the latter can't risk a gybe to port until Al is good and ready to let him. Al and Frank waited until the port approach to the leeward mark would be nearly a beam reach. Being the first to gybe, Al and Frank would then be to windward of Brian and Scott and inside at the mark. Al did end up rounding ahead of Brian and added slightly to that lead up beat #2. The run proceeded without untoward incidents for Al and Frank who continued to sit near the transom, but ...
