Derwyn and Nancy ease Big Bird around the windward mark, just ahead of ...
...

... Fred and Anne McNutt and their lovely light blue sails.
Young Ann MacDougall has the helm while dad, Ian, crews, and will be next around.
...

Not the greatest first beat for George and Grace but at least they're ahead of Mike Schoenborn (r)
who won the 1969 Nationals here in a thrilling duel with George.
...

Lying 2-3-4 early on the first reach are the Koflers, the Schonborns and the Gottschlings. Here, Julia gets the pole up as Al has decided it's spinnaker time. That spinnaker proves to pay big dividends in the form of planing possibilities in the long gusts, especially if you go up in the lulls and down with the puffs.
...

View from the gybe mark: Al and Julia (l) have passed the Koflers (r) and are now challenging Alfie and Mike for the lead. Many of the other boats have had trouble sailing their spinnakers this close to the wind and have disappeared off to leeward.
