the 2007 North Bay
Wayfarer Weekend Tues 3 July: Trout Lake Poker Race - 4 photos by Julia & Al Schonborn; Dave & Carol Hansman |
Our second leg was from
Ken's
place into Dugas Bay where Charlie and Shirley Hansman, Dave's parents, would be waiting on the beach. ... |
In due course, even
Julia and
Al have picked up their goodies from Ken and have run
down into the
middle of Trout Lake on the first available puff. By
now, some of the
others are pretty far ahead - the leader being about to
round Pilot
Point and turn south into Dugas Bay, site of waypoint
#2. -

The camera takes one
last look at Ken with his next card package at the ready. ... |
Our fleet is scattered
across
the west end of Trout Lake in very patchy winds. - click here

Note how John and Dave (l) are staying well
away from the
shore's wind shadow. Andrew Haill meanwhile, (3rd from left) continues to lead and has luffed up to closehauled to enter Dugas Bay. - click here for full-size pic ... |
Sue and Andy (r) seem to be doing
all right for
wind. ... |
Here's what things looked
like
without the zoom as the main body of our fleet turned to
round Pilot
Point. ... |
And now a zoomier shot from
SHADES!! - click here

All the leading spinnakers
are
now down. Note the healthy ... ... |
... clearance being given
Pilot
Point (not visible on the right) as most boats sail almost
over to
Hemlock Island. - click here for full-size pic ... |
The view from Dave
Hansman's Banshee
off Pilot Point:
Note that John de
Boer (2nd from
left) is gambling a bit
by cutting much closer to the Point than is Dave. And
4th from left,
that little red dot, is Uncle Al's spinnaker. -

When SHADES reached the
entrance to
Dugas Bay, this was the view. - click here

Starting the third leg, the
Race
got a new leader, as Njord (Andrew
Haill
/Michele Dicker) was passed by Banshee with Dave and Carol Hansman who ... ... |
... saw this view astern as
they
headed past Hemlock Island to go and see their daughter,
Erinn. -

Meanwhile, back at
waypoint #2:
Uncle Al has just
returned from dropping the tiller and jumping into the
water, rather
than to get into a
discussion about where Julia should jump overboard to
rush to the beach
to make the pick-up. And he is still under-amused. Even
in a fun race,
the competitive instinct is hard to totally throttle.
... |
Still, Al does take the
time to
get a quick pic of Charlie and Shirley at their duty
station. ... |
On the way past Hemlock
Island, Banshee
has just passed Njord
to take over the lead, a moment that of course, had to be documented in pixels. ... |
Another look astern as the
Hansmans prepare to ... - click here

... pass between Hemlock
and
Poplar Islands and cross back to the north side of Trout
Lake. ... |
Most of us have now made
our
second pick-up. ... |
