the 2007 North Bay Wayfarer Weekend
Tues 3 July: Trout Lake Poker Race - 5
photos by Julia & Al Schonborn; Dave & Carol Hansman

Aboard SHADES, Julia gets to multi-task while Al gets one quick shot looking ahead, and ...
...

... one looking astern. Eeek! See that wake wobble??!! Tsk, tsk!!
...

And looking back from Banshee: Not much wind left in the passage between Hemlock and Poplar. And no excitement of trying for the shortcut across the sandbar at the east end of Hemlock for Julia and Al (r) this year, since sailing down with the puffs has taken them well clear of that bit of fun.
...

John and Mike are finally escaping the wind shadow off waypoint #2.
...

Sue and Nicole are bringing a nice breeze with them, a puff that ...
...

... Andy and Joan, as well as the ...
...

... Chick Boat are enjoying, also.
...

As Al and Julia try to pass to windward, Henry flies the 3215 chute while Klaus ...
...

... just scrapes by the last bit of Poplar Island.
...

Perhaps a small sigh of relief from ...
...

... (l to r) Henry, Jacob and Klaus.
...

Al and Julia now have Pat and Fred in their sights as they begin to cross Trout Lake.

...

... John. All three are nearing waypoint #3 where ...
...
... the Hansmans' proud daughter, Erinn, waits to welcome the leaders.
...
After the gybe, Dave gets a quick shot of a very happy Carol with nearly becalmed boats in the background.
...
As 2nd-place John and 3rd-place Tony prepare to make their pick-up from Erinn ...
...
... it is becoming increasingly clear that our time table of a picnic lunch at 1 p.m. at the McNutts' and the subsequent lengthy haul back to the west end of Trout Lake cannot accommodate our drifting on to waypoints 4 and 5. So, PRO Dave gets out the cell phone, and informs those manning #4 and #5 that they can pack it in, and then calls in an update to Fred and Anne that ...
...

... the next (and final) leg will look like this - see red line above.
...
While poor, overworked Dave is on the phone, John and Dolores drift on by into a lead they will not give up.
...

Significantly later: Andrew (9657) and Al are making a ...
...

... good race of it as they rush to ...
...

... reach the ...
...

... lovely Erinn.
...

Perfect drifter form for ...
...

... Captain Andrew and Mate Michele.
