Lots of port-starboard meeting potential here, so it behooves everyone to keep a good look-out!   - for full-size pic, click here

Al (3854) has gone uncharacteristically out to the  left here. If Sue's wind (l) is a sign of things to come,
Al, Tony (4105) and Dave (282) will be seriously knocked and in trouble.
...

If Andrew (4610) cannot clear John here, he has a quick decision to make: tack or bear away? If he thinks he's on a favoured port tack, he should probably bite the bullet, ease his main and bear away - the next time they meet, the shoe should be on the other foot! If Andrew chooses to tack, he must do so early enough to not foul John or let him sail over his wind. Even a successful tack here will trap Andrew on starboard for some time. Thus Andrew does not want to tack here if he's close to the port lay line.
...

A couple of minutes later: After their odd start, Jason and Lori (3140) went off to the right side where they moved Green Side Up very well and also got a few shifts. Now, as they rejoin us, they are among the race leaders. Tony (4105) continues to ...
...

... move well. Poor John (7351) has to bear away for not only Tony but also ...
...

... for Jason (3140) and, most likely for Sue (4677).
...

Colin (r) is having to bear away less and will ...
...

... come out of this with John (centre) having dropped into Colin's backwind.
...

Al (3854), meanwhile, managed to cross all the starboard threats and has now, like Jamie (4594) and Dave (282) sailed into a port-tack header. Having hoped for just such a header, Al is more than ready to tack, and to thus regain touch with the half-dozen starboard boats he's just finished barely crossing.
...

Being near the port lay line, Andrew Gumley (4610) wisely chooses to bear away for
Tony (4105) and Jason (l). Paul (3933), meanwhile, appears to have a nice port-tack lift.
...

Having regained touch with the main body of the fleet, Al (3854) tacks near the port lay line, confident that, barring unforeseen incidents, he will cross all four starboard tackers coming towards him.   - for full-size pic, click here
...

Most importantly for Marc and Al's series standing, they will cross John and Dolores (7351).
...

Also in fine form are Jamie and Ben (4594) coming in along the starboard layline. They do, however, illustrate here, one of several reasons why it's unwise to get to the lay line too early. A big starboard lift, leaves them with nothing to gain but a little smidgen of speed as they reach in towards the mark. Compare their approach with John's (7351, at right) who has avoided the lay line and is now perfectly placed to make use of his lift (while it lasts). Al (3854) has a different slant and just plods along, waiting for Marc to ...    - for full-size pic, click here

... give him the word that he can tack and lay. What a treat to have a crew that can do this almost infallibly!!
...

Marc has given the word, and SHADES is on her way to a first-place rounding. Hard to credit what John is doing to ...

...

... Andrew here: John is known to point very well, but this is ridiculous!!
...

No consideration for good pals here as his tack to lay the mark has put Al right on Tony's wind.
...

Still, Al won't be there long, as he rounds onto the first reach. This might be a good spot for Tony to try cranking in
his main, and letting the boat heel a bit, i.e. go into heavy pinching mode, since he is so close to laying the mark.
...

Jamie and Ben are about to round 2nd - and not a moment too soon for John who is just crossing Andrew G (4610) and waiting for Jamie to get off his wind. Meanwhile, it looks like two more tacks for Tony (r) who must be beginning to dislike this mark with a serious passion!
...

Jamie and Ben are ...
...

... about to round, leaving John and Dolores free to pinch up and around the mark in their ...
...

... inimitable style. A quick glance at what John (r) is doing might have convinced Mr. Gumley (4610)
to tack for the mark instead of bearing away for Jason (3140).
...

John and Dolores are about to lay the mark and round 3rd. Tony has tacked and should come out of this OK.
