A fine-looking reach-to-reach gybe for Steph and Sue
...

Wide and close, as they used to tell us at Junior Club!! Here, Paul is approaching close and will thus end up ...
...

... coming out wide. Any boat close astern could gybe into that space, take Paul's wind, and be gone!!
...

Mike and Bill (398) make their move on Robin and Marjorie, but it's too late, since the ...
...

... gybe mark is at hand.
...

Talk about eager! Bill has crawled under the boom to be ready for post-gybe action. When Frank was my crew and this eager, he used to unclip the pole just before our gybe but remain to windward while he did that. I wouldn't want to risk what Bill is doing here in any kind of a stiff or gusty breeze - a capsize or injury could result!
...

Again, in any kind of a breeze, it is far easier to wrestle the pole back onto the mast if you keep it pointing as far forward as possible.
The "balls" system makes this kind of thing a lot easier.

All in all, Mike and Bill (398) might have been better off to round and go low and try to pass Robin to leeward:
easier spinnaker work that way (less chance of the spi pushing you backwards as above) plus you avoid the spectre of a luffing match.

The second beat: Leader, Frank has tacked almost immediately after rounding, while (l to r) Al, Marc and Lori seem happy with port tack.

Frank (red hull) has just wisely tacked back to stay in touch with his closest competition.

The second reach has turned pretty close-winded for the later boats. Even the intrepid Sue and Steph (l) have doused their chute.

Marc (864) has timed his tack into this beautiful starboard-lifted slant perfectly, and may well have caught Frank (648),
especially if the latter ends up getting the wind direction Marc has right now, a slant that would seriously knock Frank on port.

Appearances may deceive here, but Frank (r) appears to have lost several boats by going left.
