Pumpkin Regatta October 1-2, 2005 Race 2 pics, part 1 by Marc Bennett |
Aaron Chambers &
Peter
Nicks in their CL14, and Nikki Quinn with Sorin Popa in the colourful
Laser 2 test the still increasing winds on port tack prior to race 2.
Meanwhile, Dave and Ross (282) look to be in fine form except that
their main luff shows stretch marks which will pull the draft too far
forward!
... |
The Laser starting beep
goes, and this time, it's Brad Biskaborn (170654) who gets the
start ahead of ... ... |
... Oliver Darroch (176096)
while Steve Carroll (156896) - always a threat - lurks not far behind.
Note the "windward end at any cost" start being set up by Rick Goldt (far
left) who ... ... |
... waits for the traffic
to clear. ... |
Under the cliff and the
Race Hut, the wind can be quite odd: note Oliver (176096) with a nice
hiking-strength gust while Brad is dying right next to him. Rick
meanwhile, has lots of guts and is gybing in hopes that he can squeeze
into the more or less non- existent space between Steve (156896) and
Kevin Biskaborn (61007) without fouling either one!!
... |
Now Brad has wind also. But
will it be too late to escape Oliver's lee bow? ... |
Unfortunately ... ... |
... not! ... |
Rick (38585) has indeed
managed to squeeze in and actually looks in better shape than Steve
Dietrich (11) who ... ... |
... is sitting right in the
wind shadow of his pal, Steve Carroll (156896). ... |
Looks like Kevin (61007)
may get the last of the puff and escape this mess but the other guys
have simply taken too long and are now SOL. ... |
Daniel Chevalier and
Bianca Romangnoli check out the line in their 420, while ... ... |
... John and Dolores (7351)
keep a wary eye on Bob Hendry in his cruiser. ... |
Mike and Kirk hang around
under the Race Hut where they will be well placed to get their 5-minute
beep timed to perfection. ... |
The start area was a busy
place. ... |
Jacob Marsh and Hannah
Watson run the line in their battenless Laser 2. ... |
Mike Perks and Alex Dikih
return in their Lightning from a late lunch? ... |
Nick and Joe do a practice
start on starboard, then ... ... |
... bear away, satisfied
that everything that can go wrong, will!! ... |
The milling around gets
more intense during the final half minute. ... |
The gun goes and here we
see Dave and Ross (282) off to a great start until the ... ... |
... wily veteran, Mike
Codd with Kirk Iredale starts to pinch them off. Less obvious here, is
the fact that Uncle Al screwed up his start and Marc has decided that
he might as well record the debacle in pixels. Not only does Al have
both Mike and Dave sitting on his wind, but he can't even hope to do
better by footing off because ...
... |
... off his leeward bow we
have John de Boer who in turn has ... ... |
... Joe DeBrincat with Mike
Anspach off his bow!! ... |
Things look a bit grim
aboard SHADES, but when all else fails under these
circumstances, head for the moorings!!! So, Marc snapped this one last
picture, and we tacked away. And we did indeed manage some damage
control
nearer the moorings and rounded inside at the point as planned but a
good 100 yards behind Mike, Joe and John. It was in fact, good close
racing down to #3 as the lead changed hands frequently and the leaders
were all bunched as they rounded the windward mark.
... |
But in the end, Al
gained
big time by gybing around #3 which had been placed even closer to the
airport side shore than usual. Thus, he and Marc - after losing
distance early - ended up in steadier breezes than the other guys who
were mostly fighting each other into what intermittently became the lee
of the right-side shore. By the time anyone noticed or chose to react,
Al and Marc were off to a runaway win - just the way Rick Goldt used to
sail that leg and kill us!!!

... Nikki Quinn and Sorin
Popa get a bit of spinnaker practice in after their once-around race as
we start our second beat back towards the dam. ... |

In the cramped confines of
the Laser 2, it's nice to stretch one's legs occasionally! And nice
legs they are, I'm sure!!! |
