the Hermit
Island Wayfarer Rally Small Point, Maine * August 13-20, 2005 Uncle Al's Scrap Book: Monday, the 15th - 1 pics by Julia and Al Schonborn |
Bill Harkins and his
gang
had arrived from Virginia the previous night (above). More rain
overnight had left our outdoors well washed as Al sat (fairly)
patiently in the car about 7 a.m., waiting for Julia to complete her
toilette. The camp store and its coffee would not be available until 8
a.m., so we decided to forage around Popham
for a breakfast alternative to Spinney's
- as soon as we had gone to the nearest gas
station (in Phippsburg), to feed an increasingly thirsty car and get Al a coffee
at the
station's general store.

A signpost at the junction
of Rtes 216 and 217 directed us to Sebasco and ... ... |
... the Water's Edge
Restaurant, which alas, was not open at this hour. ... |
The man next door was
already hard at work though. ... |
So, it was back to Popham.
The forecast was for clearing skies but for the moment, the islands off
Popham State Park in ... ... |
... the mouth of the
Kennebec River ... ... |
... provided us with ... ... |
... some nice "mood" shots. ... |

The previous morning, we
had gone to Percy's, a charming general store practically next
door to Spinney's in Popham, where we had bought an area map
and a few munchies, and "discovered" that they also served breakfast
which could be enjoyed ... ... |
... in this nice, basic
porch right on the beach. The food was great and reasonably priced, and
Julia and I - and subsequently Chuck and Ginny - ate breakfast here
every day after this. On this day, we actually made it back in time to
catch much of the Skippers' Meeting and discover that the day's port of
call was to be Cundys Harbor. So, it was off to the dock where those of
us who had not covered our boats from the night's downpours had ...
... |
... some serious bailing to
do. Here, Al is using a pump kindly lent him by André, having
cleverly rigged his spinnaker sheet barberhauler to keep the exhaust
hose outboard. ... |
Blue Mist remains
peacefully on her mooring with the radar reflector on duty to warn off
any stray supertankers, while ... ... |

Monique, Tom Erickson, André and Mary (mostly hidden by her
mainsail) ... ... |

journey. ... |

André and Monique
gave Dick (blue top) and his crew du jour, Joe (red jacket) a ride ... ... |
... out to ... ... |
... Blue Mist. It's
a tricky manoeuvre getting from a boat under sail onto ... ... |
... a covered Wayfarer! ... |
As we follow the group out
of The Branch in light airs on an ebbing tide ... ... |
... the cloud cover to the
north and west begins to break up. ... |
While the Girards check out
the Marina ... ... |
... the cruise leaders get
a closer look at what appears to be a sailing club (note masts and
moored RC boat?) as they pass to starboard of Goose Rock (top right of
chart below) into a little cove inside Flat Point. ... |
In these very light winds
... ... |
... Chuck and Al (note
his
brand new CanAm Regatta shirt!) are leery of going anywhere too
far away in SHADES which carries only one under-sized paddle.
In essence, we don't want to go any place where we can't rely on the
incoming tide (after 1300 hrs) to take us in the right direction if the
wind should quit.
... |
So, we decided to check out
the west side of Hermit Island and its ... ... |
... several beaches. ... |
It's a lazy day and the sky
is clearing. ... |
Still moving with an ebbing
tide, we head south past the red buoy off Wood Island (r).
The sea looks deceptively flat here but we can feel a gentle swell
which is ... |
