day's end on the beach which is ...
...

... beautifully sheltered by ...
...

... Falconbridge Island
...

a  misty, drizzly? morning, but ...
...

... not for long. A mere hour or two later, Carolyn Riddell is basking in the sun.

Hans Gottschling checks to confirm that his bailers are closed.

Frank Eberdt checks shroud tension and spreader angle with tools from ...

... his handy, dandy kit.

Julia and Al leave the beach for what looks to be a fine day for racing.
...

The Cruise Race: a classic SW breeze for a starting beat towards the west end of Trout Lake, a few miles away.
Here, Julia and Al have SHADES in fine trim, but ...
...

... have some serious catching up to do as they (2nd from right) near the first mark off Dugas Bay. Well ahead of them are (l to r) Bob Tier (or is that George Blanchard?), Hans Gottschling, Alf Easy and Ann MacDougall. This state of affairs  - for full-size pic, click here
...

This state of affairs caused Al to take a few risks that he still vividly recalls today: To beat Ann around Murdoch Island which had to be left to port, Al pinched so close that he ran his board onto the rocks. Without thinking, he jumped out the leeward side in bare feet to "fend off" and promptly cut open his feet on the sharp boulders. The next trick that lured Al was a shortcut across an obvious sandbar at the SW end of Poplar Island that the leaders were going around. Sure enough, halfway across SHADES' hull began to touch bottom (the board and rudder already being full up). Al quickly jumped overboard once more - this time into lovely soft sand - and holding the tiller, he ran alongside in ankle-deep water until it became knee-deep. And Julia never once let the spinny collapse! What a fine crew! And we gained a hundred yards or so!!
...

After the tricky winds inside of Garbage Island, Julia and Al caught better winds in mid-lake and moved past Alf and Mike (l).
...

Eventually, all that remained was a short beat from Rolph Island back to the finish off Falconbridge,
during which lightweights, Al and Julia ...
...

... easily held off Alf and the much heavier Mike.
