Also wary of starboard boats are Dave and Carol.
...

While Al (3854) continues towards the starboard lay line, Marc takes a chance by committing himself to a port-tack approach
to the mark, one which will leave him with few, if any, rights as the five of us converge on this mark.
...

Frank has begun his run with a lovely lead (not to mention the lovely, lovely crew!!) and promptly gybes to port so that
he can defend the left side, just the way he and Al used to do it. The camera lies, of course. It looks like Frank and Dave ...
...

... are about to collide, but a glance at apparent mast height shows that Frank is far closer to the camera than Dave.
Just for giggles, who has the right of way here? Since both are on port, Frank (windward) must keep clear.
...

And he does so.
...

Excitement at the mark: Al approaches on starboard while Lori (3140), Marc (864) and Dave (282) are on port.
...

Looks like Marc is crossing Al nicely (apparent mast height!!) but will hold his tack 'til he's sure to lay the mark.
...

Good news and bad news for Al (r): The bad news is that he can't quite lay the mark and will be not just screwed but truly f*cked if he has to tack here (in fact, he'd have to gybe away to avoid a monster foul what with three boats set to come along on starboard). But the good news is that W3854 has good speed and very flat water, and Al plans to "shoot" the mark. "The trick here," Al explains to an ...
...

... understandably nervous Angus, "is to goose the boat along at full speed until the last possible second, even if that means sailing slightly low of the mark. And then we'll luff up. And you, Angus, need to uncleat the jib and be ready to release it to make sure it doesn't fill on the wrong side when I luff up, and thus slow us down or even worse, push us onto port tack."
...

Un morceau de gateau, as they don't say in French but should!! Angus still is not entirely sure about all this, but ...
...

... it all worked out fine in the end, and Al and Angus ...
...

... rounded 2nd.
...

Though not by all that much!! Not to worry however: Marc may be guillotined by his mainsheet as soon as he gybes,
since one of the boom blocks appears to have slid forward in a not-very-nice manner!!
...

Al rushes to "defend the left" (other things being equal as far as he can tell) before Marc ...
...

... a kindred spirit can do so.
...

Lori and Andrew round in 4th place ahead of Dave and Carol.
...

Note how nicely Lori has eased her main and heeled the boat to windward a bit, all of which is encouraging her boat to bear away.
...

This is one situation in which it pays to go past the mark a length or so,
in order to gain total freedom to let the boom run out without hitting the mark.
...

Dave and Carol are next around.
...

No risk to the port approach for Sue here, since no boats are very close.
...

The spinnaker hoists as water-based Marc Lamadeleine saw them - note Al defending the left.
