Start #2 for the
Chesapeakes and Highlanders: Peter Bell once more ... ... |

start at the now favoured

race 2, which ... ... |

Chris Legg (r) will tack to port immediately, leaving ... ... |

Later in the day, we got a
lull in the wind and our only chance to capture Frank Pedersen (4270)

One of the problems
with
taking pictures from your boat is that you never get to be in any
sailing pictures. Thus, I couldn't resist borrowing these three shots
by Carrol McCormack from the Rock Hall YC web site. Above, we
see ourselves in Wayfarer 3854 awaiting the ...

... leeward
end where we
have seen boats on the left side getting some wind. Tony Krauss (4105)
and Mr. Rovanpera (5150) will try the RC boat end - with more success.
The boats who went centre right ended up getting better wind and
shifts, leaving Mark (2nd from right) and Al (far right) to
fight an uphill comeback battle. Using his spinnaker to full effect,
Uncle Al actually recovered the Wayfarer lead on the first run and then
battled it out once more with the three Windmills who were evenly
matched with each other and with us. Near the finish, we held a
narrow lead over the three Windmills until Allen Chauvenet came in on a
nice lift/puff combination after banging the right corner. Allen now
"owes us one" because, being aware that Mark Lathrop had won races 1
and 2, Marc and I decided that we would restrain ourselves: We could
have sailed right up to Allen, lee-bowed him and pinched him off
viciously until he was forced to tack away and thus "won" the race with
the three Windmills, since Allen was already on the lay line with
better wind and leading the Windmills by a narrow margin. Instead, we
tacked well to leeward of Allen and before we hit the better wind, and
lost to all three Windmills. Allen, I hope you appreciate how hard we
had to work to throttle our competitive instincts!! |
