Saturday pics: race 1, part 1

An excellent start for Nick (864) with Geoff (9483) to windward and astern. Off to leeward, Mark (7673) and Al (3854) are fighting it out. Al and his crew, Frank, have decided to go left, which usually pays with the wind from this direction.
...

Mike and Sean (4271) tack away for clear air, as do John and Dolores de Boer (7351). Bad news for Geoff (9483) who has fallen down on Brian (9235) who is moving and pointing very well. Unless the expected port-tack lift comes through, Al (far left) will be in trouble.
...

As Brian (9235) continues to move well on starboard, Geoff (9483) finally tacks away.
But has he left it too late? John and Dolores (7351) are moving well, and ...
...

... will get through to leeward.

A lovely action shot of John and Dolores with Tawas Point in the background, and ...

... Geoff (l) in pursuit.

...

Look at the great hiking being done by Dave Hansman on 9483 as he and Geoff power through John and Dolores.
...

It's a very close race as ...
...

... (l to r) Brian, Al and Roger ...
...
... approach the windward mark near the port layline.
...
Mark and Paul Taylor play catch-up.
...

Mike Anspach (4271) has done well over on the right side, ending up even with Geoff (9483)
- looks like Mike could use more vang, though.
...

Al (l) has decided to tack for the starboard Nick (behind Bob Frick in 3975), perhaps unwisely, since Al is now trapped on starboard until Nick chooses to tack for the mark. Brian (9235) remains in the lead and will have the freedom to tack at will.
...

Coming out of the left corner and looking good are ...
...

... Paul and Lorrie McVey ...
...

... although a touch more vang might help.
...

Brian and Scott (9235) lead the way onto the first run, closely pursued
by Geoff and Dave (9483) and Nick and Joe (864) as well as by ...
...

... Uncle Al and Frank (3854).  Also still very much in contention are
John and Dolores (7351), Roger and Joanne (7700) and Mark and Paul (7673).
...

Al (3854) goes high to take Brian's (9235) only to discover that he'll never get through Nick's (864) lee, so ...
...

... he tries an early gybe which gives the additional benefit of putting Al on starboard
when and if these boats meet again near the leeward mark.
...

Note how Brian and Scott (9235) have let off a bit of vang to give themselves a bit more margin for error, i.e. the boom won't hit the water as easily, should the boat start to rock a bit. Nick and Joe also look good, but are sailing high than they really need to - no doubt much to Brian's delight/relief. Nick could, after all, sail lower and disturb 9235's wind!!
