If you've got the nerve, standing in the boat as Brian is doing above, makes it easier to keep the boat level.

Nick and Joe continue to challenge.

(l to r) Geoff, Roger, Al and John. Al, having secured the inside position, will now ...
...

... gybe back to starboard as SHADES passes the start/finish line on his way to the leeward mark.
Note how Al is steering with his knees while holding the sheets to keep the chute flying through the gybe.

A fine gybe is completed.

Moving well are Mark and Paul who ...
...

... have made up distance since rounding of a sub-par beat. Note how high Geoff's boom is riding on 9483.
This will keep it out of the water but if done to excess, easing the vang will
  • promote rocking that can lead to a death roll (capsize to windward)
  • make it harder to get to boom to gybe since the top of the main goes too far forward

Roger admires the fine job Joanne is doing with the spinny.

Nick and Joe (864) duck in anticipation of a gybe towards the leeward mark.

This picture shows the value of defending the left side of a buoys to port run (all else being equal!). With the mark rapidly approaching, Mark (7673) - inside and on starboard - is in control. Roger (7700) will have to put off a gybe to port and towards the mark until Mark gybes. With the mark only about 100 yards away, Nick will end up stuck on the outside unless he can sail higher, plane, and sneak across both 7673's and 7700's bows which is doubtful and risky. A great sneaky move for Nick in this position would be to luff up hard and cut across the starboard tackers' transoms. If the mark is already only a few seconds away, Nick should douse the chute rapidly here and then go up. If there is some distance still to sail, Nick wants to luff up as much as needed, luffing the chute for a few seconds, if necessary. This would put him on the inside and might well lead to an overlap since Nick could blanket the other two when they gybe.

Just past the leeward mark, Brian (l) retains the lead over Al (green hull) and Roger (r). Nick, meanwhile, is ...
...

... paying for a late, rushed douse ...
...

... with a snarled halyard. The leaders, Brian and Scott (9235), meanwhile head left to cover Al who has tacked.

Roger and Joanne perhaps heeling a tad too much?

Geoff (9483) and John (7351) continue their battle up the right side of the second beat.

John and Dolores are in fine fettle as they "dig back in" towards the rhumbline.

Brian and Al (3854) have pulled away on this second and somewhat breezier second beat, with Brian still leading.
