Saturday morning in
Oakville threatened a repeat of last year's blizzard but
later the sun came out and we had a great day with temps
barely below freezing! ... |
The AGM got underway
just after 6 PM at TS&CC. (counterclockwise from
right) Dwight Aplevich, Alastair Ryder-Turner
(our new Trophy Secretary), George Blanchard, Fred
Black, Barry Hitchcock. ... |

Dwight, Dave Hansman, former W649 and we hope,
W-to-be, Tom Johannsen, Reg Bunt (clockwise around the table from Bill Fyfe with his back to us) John de Boer, Kit Wallace, Peter Kozak ... |

Waiting for dinner: (near

and Dwight Aplevich (far table, l to r) Reg Bunt and spouse, Lou Scaglione ... |
The first table is
about to hit the food line: (l to r) John de
Boer, Carol and Dave Hansman, Denise Wong and her
husband, Mark Taylor (the freshly minted Mississauga SC
Commodore!) ... |
New Wayfarer, Brian
Ritchie (W240), visited from Belleville and sat with
Margie Harrington. She and Dick promptly signed him up
for the Rally on the St. Lawrence River in NY State near
Kingston. ... |

Kozak's wife, Linda; Hans and Mudl Gottschling, Kit and

be perked up by the awards festivities. ... |

North Bay's Dave
Hansman proudly displays the Red Herring Trophy
which he earned for best displaying the Wayfarer Spirit
in 2005. ... |
Our Most Improved
sailor of 2005 was without a doubt, Alastair
Ryder-Turner who promptly passed much of the credit on
to his sons, David and Andrew, his super crews! ... |
Dick Harrington's
excellent log, A Dinghy
Sailor's Sketches of Chesapeake Bay, earned the Ted Davis Memorial
Trophy as the year's best Cruise Log. ... |
Despite missing
the US Nationals at the Cottonwood where Al got his
butt kicked in a Lightning instead, Uncle Al and
super-crew, Marc Bennett (l) won the Storer
Trophy yet again with wins in the North
Americans, the Canadians and the Ontarios. It's a sign
of the times that while Marc and Al only sailed three
of the four majors, no one else had the time, money or
enthusiasm to sail more than two of the four events
being counted.

The pinnacle of
Canadian Wayfarer achievement is the George Smith
Trophy which is awarded from time to time to a
Wayfarer sailor who has made exceptionally outstanding
contributions to our Class over the years. This year,
it was earned by Kit Wallace, our long-standing
Membership Secretary, who enthusiastically races and
cruises his W1037 Ab faB.
... |
Our Silver Spirit
Award is given to Wayfarers who have participated
in 50+ Wayfarer events and who show up at our AGM to
collect it. This year's winners were Dwight and Pat
Aplevich, and ... ... |
... Peter Kozak. ... |
The Gold Award
is usually reserved for Wayfarers who have
participated in 100+ events. This year, we made an
exception for special contributions to our Class.
Cruiser, Dick Harrington, has fewer "events" to bulk
up his Wayfarer resume than we racers do, and is
unlikely to reach 100 events. But Dick is the driving
force behind our annual Cruising Rally which is
becoming the best attended W event in North America,
while at the same time, he tirelessly and selflessly
advises beginning sailors, would-be cruisers and
wooden boat owners from his vast fund of experience.
Thus, he is a worthy Gold Award recipient in 2006.
... |
Also an
exceptional-case Gold Award winner was John Weakley
who has sailed numerous W races but has been an
outstanding Race Officer for us on at least as many
occasions, including during the past two Canada-based
Wayfarer Worlds where he was our superb Principal Race
Officer. Thanks a million, John!
... |
George Blanchard
expressed our thanks to TSCC club manager, Derek
Griffiths, and to our caterer, Leanne. ... |
Uncle Al's attempt to
cover our 2005 events in 30 minutes with a
computer-generated slide show lasted nearly 60 minutes
before his wife, Julia, "gonged" him, and Al fled to the
bar, leaving Tawas and Clark Lake uncovered. ... |

Our Detroit guests,
Nick and Mary Seraphinoff, jockey for the favoured end
of the bar. |
