The
Cottonwood
Regatta & U.S. Nationals Catawba YC, Charlotte, NC April 24-25, 2004 Saturday morning ashore photos by Emily Johnson, Alan Hallwood and Bill Waller |
A peaceful scene
as we
arrive for the big first day of racing. Lovely sunshine
but ... ... |
... a bit low on
wind? ... |
A Lightning
ghosts
towards the docks after launching. ... |
John Weakley
prowls
the premises as Uncle Al gets ready to hand over the
camera duties to
Emily. ... |
No one appears
overly
nervous as yet. ... |
Coffee and orange
juice - the staples of morning life. ... |
Uncle Al has not
yet
seen the coffee! ... |
I hope these
intrepid
campers are good at sleeping on an angle??? ... |
Jim Higgins (l)
and John Weakley at the registration desk. ... |
Noelle DeBrincat
(l)
and Emily look set to go while Morris Metcalf waits to
register. ... |
A display from
one of
our sponsors. ... |
The club as seen
from
the main dock. You can tell it's early since few of the
prime porch
spots are occupied so far. ... |
The Nutshell
(red) gets
to sleep in but W3568 and Rod Anderson are up and about. ... |
Part of the RC
heads
out to check Saturday morning conditions on Lake Wylie. ... |
Things are
looking up
in the wind department! ... |
All is right with
our
world. ... |
A model ... ... |
... sailing day. ... |
Business picks up
at
the docks as the Competitors' Meeting approaches. ... |
Peter and Alex
Rahn
launch Shadow with an appropriate flourish. ... |
The RC returns
with a
weather report. ... |
Hans Gottschling
watches his beloved Nutshell from a perch on the
trailer tongue
since Al is happy to help launch but has a 2" trailer
ball - a legacy
from SHADES' 1983 Worlds trip to England. That
trip required 2"
balls (so to speak). The regular North American trailer
ball size being
1 7/8", Hans' trailer tongue doesn't quite fit Al's
hitch, hence Hans
as the dead weight (so to speak) on the tongue. It was
easier done than
said obviously!! ... |
The eventual
Lightning
winners, Pete Marriott and crew, get set to launch. ... |
Looking out
towards
Lake Wylie from the keelboat area ... ... |
... and looking
in
from the outermost dock. ... |
Mo
Metcalf preparing Murphy's Law for the
Saturday morning race
now that the meeting is done. ... |
Sails go up and
the
fleets prepare to head out for Saturday's racing in
light winds. ... |
Hans and Frank (l)
in the Nutshell leave the dock to start
the regatta Saturday morning. |
