Jim and Joanne have W10302 beautifully trimmed as they approach the windward mark, while ...
...

... Uncle Al (also working on his tan) has given the Vanguards a good run for their money after starting
at the unfavoured end about 10 seconds behind the Vanguard fleet, whose leaders (r) will round behind him.
...

While Nick (864) pursues Jim (r) under spinnaker, the Vanguard leader, Brian Zimmerman (739) rounds just ahead of ...
...

... 1001, Dan Lawrence, ...
...

... Stanley Hassinger (1289). Meanwhile, back in Wayfarers, note how Uncle Al (red spi) is heeling SHADES
slightly to windward so that Marc will have an easier time keeping the spinnaker filled.
...

Another close battle among the evenly matched Vanguards near the windward mark.
...

Mike Stoughton (717) gets set to round just ahead of Mark Atkinson.
...

Looks like the Vanguards are going for the North Carolina side of Lake Wylie for this run.
...

Ron Wright and crew have 14620 moving very well ...
...

... on their way to victory in race 2.
...

A lovely, quick hoist as they, too, head for North Carolina.
...

Pam Barron (15180) about to round in pursuit of Mr. Wright who has had the decency to sail into a hole. Note the crew holding out 14620's boom. A windward heel might help them fill that spinnaker once the first bit of breeze returns.
...

Instant hoist for 15180 which is still beside the mark, while nice roll tack by Terry Tyner (14825)
puts him into great position to "attack" 15180 once the wind returns.
...

(l to r) Pam Barron, Terry Tyner and Avis Bridgers all sail well high of the rhumb line
in an attempt to increase apparent wind and get their spinnakers filled.
...

Just enough wind to keep the boats barely moving as Leonard Little pursues Bill Sloger around the mark.
...

Jill Kazerski and crew ready to start the run.
...

The Lightning fleet tacks downwind, starting off towards North Carolina.
...

Nick has decided to put Joe on the helm while he fixes a spinnaker snafu. Alas, they have been pictorially caught going through the start/finish line when they were not allowed to. Uncle Al (way off to leeward of Nick) yelled a warning but I think Nick figured this race just was not worth trying to save!
...

I think the RC have noticed Nick's little short-cut!
...

Here it was: the prohibited area through which W864 sailed. In the end, the race was won handily by Peter and Alex Rahn, with John and Dolores de Boer scoring a fine 2nd. Joe Spencer with John Weakley took a most promising 3rd while Richard and Michele Johnson nailed their second straight 4th. Completing the top 5 were Morris Metcalf and Bill Waller who also sailed a super race. Well done, all!
