A long broad reach to a green channel marker past Point Salubrious followed by a beat back to a finish at the LPSP docks was the course we agreed on. For much of the first leg, it was a close race among Tom Erickson, André Girard and Uncle Al in ideal winds of 8 -12 knots from the NW. Just when Al thought he had the lead, he discovered that he had been sailing far too low and it was Tom and André who rounded 1-2 with Al and Jake (who now had Bill Harkins as a crew!) close behind. Some fishermen who had tied up to our turning marker got a rude awakening as André almost ran over them after having trouble during his tack around the mark. Al and Jake tacked to starboard early and proceeded to outspeed the others. For a while, it appeared that Jake would eat up all of Al's 200-metre lead near the finish but then Al did a weed flush and put an end to Jake's speed advantage.

Al carefully approached the finish line in line with the harbour opening which seemed to promise more consistent winds and cruised to another first to maintain his grip on the lovely trophy which he and Annemarie Pedersen had won the previous year in Ottawa. Jake needed a 2nd nudge over the head with the baseball bat as he went left early and tried to come in along the shore with its wall of trees and attendant wind shadows! Tom Erickson meanwhile, lined up to stay in the wind funnelling out of the harbour and in a close race, managed to snatch 2nd from Jake. This left Tom and Dave in series second.

The lost point cost Jake as Jim and Brenda Meara placed 4th in the return race and ended up with 7 points and in the money with a series 3rd while Jake's 5-3 left him with 8 points in 4th overall. Only one point further back in series 5th were the Graefes who added daughter, Anna, to the mix for the return race in which they placed 5th. Consistency from Dick Harrington and André Girard who again placed 6-7 and placed 6-7 for the series as well.

Unfortunately, Uncle Al had run out of film so that the real excitement of the afternoon was not recorded for posterity: Coming into the dock, Dick Harrington lost the wind in a weed patch and began to drift towards a very posh-looking yacht tied up at the end of the dock. A lady aboard the yacht tried to fend off by grabbing Dick's shroud but missed and fell off her boat instead. Luckily she fell into the water between the two boats. She was quickly rescued by Dick and Margie, got an introductory ride in a wooden Wayfarer and everyone ended up happy.

Since only 2 boats were seeded and neither improved on their seeded position, we had some extra flags to give out and the 3 winners agreed that they could each make do with just one keeper flag and thus each participant was given a flag as a memento of a most enjoyable event.
