almost set...
...
... to go!!!
...
Uncle Al gives a one-minute beeeep,
...
... the competitors get set in their blocks
...
... including Dave Graefe and Tom Erickson.
..
The course was a fairly simple one: round Cherry Island and over to lunch at the Shangri-La at Point Peninsula.
..
And they are off! André and Monique Girard neck and neck for the early lead with our hosts, Jim and Brenda Meara.
...
Margie and Dick in a close race with Al and Julia who are using the camera to good effect.
...
As can be seen over the bow of SHADES, Tom Erickson is off to a nice lead early while through the window,
we can see Jim and Brenda also doing very nicely.
...
With the race being mostly cruising boats, we decided to ban spinnakers for this race. Here, Uncle Al and Julia have been first to get a puff and have moved past André with Monique and Jim with Brenda.
...
Nothing changes: Uncle Al sails the rhumb line towards the NE corner of Cherry Island while most of the others...
...
... sail too high.
...
Jim and Brenda in good form as rain clouds mass on the NW horizon.
...
W3098 should put on more vang to keep the boom level and the main from overtwisting.
...
Impressive looking clouds but the rain held off until we got to the restaurant and even then, it was just a few sprinkles.
..
As the boats start to round the end of Cherry Island, Al's straighter course has paid off, and he is now second behind Jake Maarse who is single-handing and has a 200-metre lead.

Experience paid off for Al who sailed well clear of the lee of the island and got a more consistent wind than Jake. As the leaders passed Cherry Island and began the beat to the finish at the docks off the Shangri-La, Jake and Al were bow to bow with Jake about 50 metres to windward. Now, in increasing winds of 8-12 knots, Jake's lack of crew worked against him. Al and Julia pulled away to win easily with crisp tacks and lots of shift playing which led to huge gains over the cruisers who tended to do the beat in a couple of lengthy tacks.
...
Second place went to Tom Erickson with Dave Graefe (W275) ...
...
... Jim and Brenda Meara (W9901).
...
Tom and Nel Graefe were next in 4th...
...
... before Jake rolled in 5th from the left corner.
...
the Frank Dye look
...
Dick and Margie appeared to be shepherding to make sure everyone was OK but still took 6th.
...
And in 7th place from the right corner, André and Monique.
