U.S. Nationals 2006 Saturday sailing pics - 2 by Emily Seraphinoff |
Still two or three minutes
... ... |
... left in our countdown. ... |
And we're into the final
minute. ... |
Rookie, Harold Whitcomb
(2304) wisely makes a cautious approach. ... |
But most of the rest of us
are pretty much on time as the gun goes. ... |
It was a nice, square line
allowing each of us to find a start in clear air, provided we started
promptly: (l to r) Tony, Scott, Joe, Frank, Al ... |
(l to r)
Al, Bob, Harold ... |
Going up the first beat with the lovely Tawas
State Park in the background. ... |
Mallory (l)
gets set to hoist as her granddad, Nick, tacks for the mark across
Frank's bow. ... |
Al starts to hoist as Nick rounds. Scott is a
close 3rd. Bob (3975) and Frank continue up their beats. ... |
Amazingly enough, this was the
last time Al (3854) had to supervise Mallory who took to the spinnaker
amazingly well. Scott (2nd from left)
will not push young Paul too hard and sail "white sail". Coming in from
the left on port is Tony who will have to give way to Frank (648) on
starboard.
... |
No spinnakers for Mary (4105) or Kim (648)
today, either. Joe (1115) is about to begin his run. Meanwhile, Nick (r) continues his close pursuit of ... ... |
... SHADES
where Al steers with his knees and flies the chute while Mallory acquaints herself with the workings of the pole system. ... |
Mike Anspach takes the helm aboard the Falcon so that Joe DeBrincat, who
is familiar with the system, can handle the spi. ... |
Al (3854) and Nick (864) continue their duel as
the Lightnings begin their second beat. The start/finish line - about
1/3 up the beat from the leeward mark - is "closed", and will rank as
an obstruction. By staying left on the run, Nick ... ... |
... has taken the lead over Al
... ... |
... at the start of the second beat. ... |
It remains a close race: (l to r) Tony, Scott, Frank ... |
With the beautiful Tawas shoreline as our
backdrop, we begin our second slog towards the windward mark: (l to r) Harold, Tony, Frank |
