The Warm Water
Wayfarers wait for ... .. |
... the breeze to fill
in. .. |
lunch time .. |
Alastair Ryder-Turner
and son, Andrew (10137) and Al Nichols (7380) with Klas Bockasten check
out the upwind possibilities provided by the light, generally westerly breeze prior to race #3. .. |
Mike Codd and Kirk
Iredale in their pre-race relaxation mode. .. |
Ditto for Al and Klas. .. |
Mark and Paul Taylor
(7673) tune their new Mike McNamara designed sails produced by Quantum
in Toronto against Dwight Aplevich and David Von Wahl (4606) as race time draws near. .. |
Hans Gottschling and
Uncle Al (foreground) combined for the
2004 Warm Water when Hans was crewless and SHADES was not yet
race-ready. Above, just after the start, Hans will be OK once he luffs
up to close-hauled as Peter Kozak (with Annelies Groen) in W300, and
John and Dolores de Boer (7351) have done. Unless of course
...
.. |
... everyone gets a
big starboard-tack knock! The new wind direction will allow most of us
to nearly lay the windward mark on port tack, so ... .. |
... it's time to tack!
Newcomers, Rod, James and Rory Garner in 8479 looking good here. A quick tacking reaction here has left Dwight Aplevich (r) in fine shape here. .. |
A nice little wind
streak has come in as the fleet works its way up the first beat of a
trapezoid course. .. |
The Taylor brothers (l)
lead Dwight Aplevich and Peter Kozak on the second leg, which was
supposed to be a starboard tack spi reach. But the wind has veered and
faded dramatically, and the leaders are now on a port-tack run. .. |
Very patchy conditions
as the pursuers struggle to ... .. |
... reach and round the windward mark. .. |
A classic jam-up at
the second corner of the trapezoid which is now in the lee of the land. All their good sailing on the first beat has not done ... .. |
... Paul Taylor
(7673), Dwight Aplevich (4606) and Peter Kozak (300) any noticeable
good. It's still anybody's race! .. |
Even without a
spinnaker - or perhaps because he didn't try one, Dwight has managed to
escape from the pack. But Mark Taylor is snapping at his heels as the
fleet passes the start-finish line which was half-way up the first
beat. Spinnaker-less Rod Gardner is looking very good in third place,
but ... .. |
...not for long, as
the spinnakers fill with a puff along the shore. Mark's spinnaker, too,
finally pays off as he and Paul move past Dwight and David into a lead they will hold to the finish. .. |
The fight over third
place remains wide open. .. |
Mark (7673) and Dwight
(4606) sail into a strengthening breeze on the second beat (up the far
side of the trapezoid). .. |
Amazingly, Hans and Al
(938) will escape from this mess to take third over John de Boer (7351) while Alastair Ryder-Turner (10137) will grab 5th. .. |
Beat #2 continues with
... .. |
... lots of ... .. |
... shifts. .. |
Approaching the
windward mark, the fleet gets a major veer which ... .. |
... leaves the leading
Taylor brothers on a close spi reach and Dwight (3rd from left)
in good shape without a spinnaker-trained crew. Peter Kozak (2nd
from left) gets a huge lift just when he doesn't want it, but he
will still rescue a 6th from this debacle. .. |
The last reach of the
trapezoid has become closehauled after the big veer. |
