2004 Warm Water Regatta Sunday - 3 photos mostly by Ben Ho |
Peter and Benjamin get
set to wing their jib as ... .. |
... Al Nichols swoops
around the mark and pops the chute nicely. Of course, sitting on the aft tank in anything short of planing conditions won't be very fast!! .. |
Just as Peter and
Benjamin finally get the jib winged, the wind comes way forward.
Murphy's Law in action. .. |
Despite holding a
substantial lead, Al insists on a finish at the favoured end. .. |
A nice comeback for
Mark Taylor ... .. |
... whose 2nd-place finish leaves him with a one-point
edge over Hans/Al in the series. In the background, Uncle Al heaves to for a well-earned smoke! .. |
It's a close one, as
Dwight (4606) just edges out John (7351) for 3rd. .. |
Dwight and David one
more time! .. |
Mike Codd crosses 5th
ahead of ... .. |
... Alastair and
Andrew who decide they've sailed enough after this race. .. |
Race 7: No pictures
from this one which saw the two series leaders fight it out in a good
close race. Al, still at the Nutshell helm, edged out Mark
Taylor, and moved into a series first-place tie at 11 points with the
latter. Realizing this, our RC decided to squeeze in one more race.
.. |
Only six of the nine
entries started this 8th and final race. A lift right at the start has
put the Taylors (2nd from right) into a nice controlling
position over Al (938). .. |
Near the end of the
second beat, the Taylors have to tack to port to round the mark, but
they still ... .. |
... maintain a narrow
lead down the final run over Al who is being challenged by Mike Codd (r). .. |
Oscillating shifts
required a few gybes. Here Al (l), Mike (CAN 90) and John
(beside Mike) all do a fine job as the pursue the leading Taylors
brothers. No more pictures, but the decisive move came at the next mark
where Al finally got bow to bow with Mark. Mark had the inside locked
up, but got so excited that he thought the next leg was another beat.
Al meanwhile, had talked the course through with Hans several times on
this run, and knew the next leg would be a spinnaker reach back to the
south side of Lake Conestoga. By the time Mark realized his mistake, he
had lost all three of the boats above - and the Carling Trophy
as well!
.. |
Series 3rd went to
John and Dolores de Boer who are shown receiving their prize Warm Water T-shirts from RC Chairman, Dave Meijer. .. |
A disappointing series
second for Mark and Paul (r) Taylor, who nonetheless smile at
the thought that their boat speed was certainly nothing to sneeze at! .. |
Winners of the Carling
Trophy for 2004 were Hans Gottschling (r) and Uncle Al
(green MoJo's shirt) who thanked the RC of Dave Meijer (red
shirt) and Alan Laderoute for their hard work and excellent courses in
tough conditions. .. |
The RC presents Al
Nichols (r) with the Most Improved flags. .. |
John de Boer (r)
gives a bit of advice to our newcomers afterwards. |
