pre-Midwinters fun

Monday afternoon: Arrival in Eustis - the car got its annual wash - as did SHADES, to remove a lot of northern road salt!!
...
Our host, Regatta Chairman Bob Brown, was hard at work, fixing up one of his borrowable boats, when we arrived.
...

A day of basking in the summer-like sun on Tuesday which found us cruising across about three miles of Lake Eustis for lunch at Amigo's. Bob navigates under the watchful coaching eye of Uncle Al who, at about this time, remembers that he didn't bring his sandals for the restaurant visit. Al was duly (but very politely!) ejected from the restaurant building but was permitted to sit out on the patio and have his beer there, right by the water. The other dozen or so Wayfarers graciously decided to move outdoors with Uncle Al who was renamed "Shoeless Al", presumably after the famous baseball novel hero, Shoeless Joe.

The sail back to the club started in moderate winds which died away gradually. But we had planned for this and sent Ed Kraft by car to get his motor boat and everyone was offered a tow back to the LESC. Above, Gale Shoemaker, the top-ranked LESC Wayfarer racer, shows his excellent light-air form.
...
Gale demonstrated the fact that when winds are blowing parallel to the shore, they are often the strongest near that shore.

INVASION in cruising mode as Roger Shepherd ghosts along
while crew, Joanne Kumpf, wastes not a second of precious sun tanning time!
...

Not good racing form as INVASION drags her "ass" - of course, this is permissible while cruising!

LESC Wayfarer Fleet co-founder, Mike Murto, in perfect single-handing form, with his weight well forward!

Wednesday was Space Shuttle launch day and Bob Brown graciously piled a group of enthusiasts into his mobile home and headed for the east coast launch site. But Marc and Uncle Al had Bennett family visits to make on the west coast of Florida. After the usual delicious breakfast courtesy of Joyce Brown, the SHADES team headed west. After a bookstore forage and a beer in historic Inverness, we angled towards the sea. We found it several times down dead-ended back roads but it was only on our third attempt that we also found a sea-side bar, about 20 miles north of Tampa.
...

While we waited for our beers, the shrimp boats headed out for their day's work.
...

Marc with his uncle, Gene, the maître d' at MoJo's in Tampa. Gene treated us to a lovely dinner there on Wednesday night.
...
Another beach-side bar - this one attached to our Wednesday night hotel accommodations.
Uncle Al (left) and Marc await the Shuttle launch - but we only saw the vapour trail from our cross-state vantage point.
....
Marc at the outdoor bar with our new-found Harley-Davidson friends, Kelly and "Shorty".
...

Marc with another uncle, who owns a tangerine farm in Lake Wales, Florida. This was only a short, half-hour visit just after noon on Thursday since we had a two-hour drive back north to Eustis and had to be on hand to do our coaching session at the LESC.
