Saturday: Race 1
photos by Uncle Al
..
A lovely, warm Fall day of about 20C but fitful winds from the west at 3- 5 knots as a pair of Sunfish prepare for race 1.
..
Someone is not trimmed right for the west winds. Bob Emans and Tom Reed (2389) get set for a bit of spinnaker practice.
..
The various fleets - Sunfish, Rebels, Wayfarers and Interlakes - mill around before the first start.
..
All participants are expected to check in with the RC before each start by approaching the RC Boat closehauled on starboard tack, which makes for a bit of a mess at times.
..
During the final minute of the Rebels' countdown, the fleet begins to converge.
..
About 15 seconds to go.
..
Imagine the loud communication that was going on at the RC boat end: 4191 seems doomed...
..
... but some kind soul let them in. But someone really pushed barging too far and has had to tack away.
At least they had the decency not to just barge right in! Well done!
..
In Wayfarers, Uncle Al got off to a good start from the start line more or less off the club. In the prevailing shift, the line was hard to cross on starboard and you could virtually lay the windward mark (#5, see chart below) on port.
..
..
Al tacked to port right at the gun and crossed the fleet. He looked good out in the middle until the wind died and came up near the south shore first where Joe DeBrincat, Bob Emans and Hubert Dauch moved into the lead. In the end, Joe rounded first and tacked onto the long starboard beat towards #1. Al decided to hold on to clear his air and was blessed with extra wind and a starboard lift while Joe and Hubert who had tacked right behind him near the Eagle's Nest on Eagle Point. Lots of shifts as we approached #1 in winds that were now gusting to 8 - 10 knots, and Al showed his Clark Lake experience as he rounded #1 with the lead over the other four ho were pretty well bunched together.
A pair of pinching Rebels kept Al in check on the long port tack beat towards #2 where he finally rounded onto a run past Eagle Point to #3 about 50 metres up on the other four.
Entrusting the tiller and his spinnaker to his crew, John Weakley, Uncle Al got this shot of Joe DeBrincat (1115)
on the run towards Eagle Point with an Interlake (left), Hubert (3636) and a Rebel in pursuit.
..
As the fleets pass Eagle Point, Tim Dowling and his daughter battle it out with another Rebel while an Interlake under spi
has gybed early to cut close to the Point.
..
Joe closes in on Uncle Al whose camera never flinches. God! You let Weakley have the tiller for just one minute...
... actually Joe wasn't gaining as much as it appears. Al was zooming in with his 80-210 lens.
..
The fleets ahead of Uncle Al have passed Eagle Point and are now on their way to #3.
..
All four leading Interlakes have passed Uncle Al and are going to cut close to Eagle Point. Nice lighting on the sails but of course, by the time Al had handed the tiller to John and extracted the camera from its bag, the best effects were gone - even with Al rushing the shot without properly focussing.
..
Still, it was a lovely view and a grand day to be out sailing!
..
Are the boats astern bringing up fresh wind? Doesn't look like it this time.
Joe (1115) could get his spi to set better by heeling to windward a bit!
..
After rounding #3 onto a short beat to a finish off the club, Al is able to capture this duel over 3rd place between
Hubert Dauch (3636) and Bob Emans (2389) who are both sailing nice and flat to help the spi fly.
..
As crew for Mike Anspach, new Wayfarer owner, Ted Hall, gets thrown right in at the deep end with a spinnaker gybe!
At the finish, it was Uncle Al covering Joe DeBrincat loosely to preserve his first, while a late spurt by Hubert Dauch gained him the nod in 3rd over Bob Emans. A relaxed Mike Anspach took his time and let his crew learn as 4271 cruised home to a 5th. And speaking of taking their time, the RC went ashore for some of the free beer and did not start race 2 until over an hour later! This was our only complaint in an otherwise perfect regatta.
