Saturday pre-race
photos by Uncle Al
..
A perfect sailing morning as Joe DeBrincat and Mark Olson (left and right) give a guided tour of their woodie to new Wayfarers, Linda and Ted Hall of Bloomington, Indiana. The Halls have just bought a partially completed wood Wayfarer kit and drove 6 hours just to meet some other Wayfarers! What welcome enthusiasm!!
..
A pleasant surprise to us was the arrival of Tom Reed (left) and Bob Emans from Cleveland.
Bob has bought a big boat and we had been afraid he might be lost to us forever!
..
As John Weakley and I went out after lunch to get SHADES ready to race and off her luxury accommodations seen above, we were pleasantly surprised to see our "baby" being studied and photographed by none other than another new Wayfarer, Mike Loviska, who lives not too far east of Clark Lake and with whom we had been in e-mail contact. Like the proud father of a new baby, Mike had a wallet full of nice photos of his Wayfarer to show us - and imagine Uncle Al's surprise when he saw the boat number - 2940. This was the beautiful composite boat Al used to borrow from Avon Sailboats' Gene Smyers while between Wayfarers in the mid-70's. The most memorable of these occasions ...
... was the windy 1974 North Americans where Al capsized in 10-foot waves, thought the bow looked awfully low in the water and decided to check the front tank. Well - it was dry - for about two seconds until the next wave hit. This picture was taken not too long after that but before Al had to get very cautiously towed in. To be noted however is the spinnaker pole that is still up. Al was the only boat to dare a spi and was OK until a rapidly approaching lee shore necessitated a gybe...
..
A glorious Fall day - and lots of prime dock space available for us visitors.
..
With the unbelievably disgusting events of September 11th still haunting us, flag protocol got special attention. As the only Canadian visitors, John and I made work for the committee but we did want to show our support for our fine neighbours!
..
After an ample, leisurely lunch, it was time for the Skippers' Meeting. PRO, Bruce Nowak, explains the 5-4-1-go starting system which is new to the ISAF Rules this year, while his assistant, CLYC Commodore, Dan Hockenberry, is ready to hand him the visuals!
..
The audience is rapt!!
..
Even Uncle Al's crew, John Weakley (left) and Nick Tanis.
..
Last time your Uncle Al saw this much arm waving was when
folks were singing the Esbjerg song at the '98 Worlds in Denmark!!
..
But - he's still got their attention!
..
`
Bruce points out the locations of the marks while Vanna White - oops, Dan Hockenberry, assists in a photogenic manner.

Racing sailboats is not the only source of fun at this regatta!
