The 2004 Canadian Wayfarer Nationals
Sunday: Race 5, part 1

John and Dolores de Boer bear away for Peter Kozak in pre-start action.
...

Nick Seraphinoff and Joe Blackmore ...
...

... are off to a lovely pin end start while Mark Taylor (7376) appears to be in great shape at the slightly favoured boat end. A poor start for John de Boer (r) but he will recover very nicely.
...

Nick continues to move very well.
...

(l to r) John Cawthorne, Nick, Dwight Aplevich, Mike Codd
...

While Hans Gottschling (938) sticks with the left side, four boats have tacked away to clear their air: (l to r) Peter Kozak, Roger Shepherd, Tim Bider and Uncle Al who got a poor start and for whom things looks unpromising at this point.
...

Nearing the windward mark just to the left of the rhumbline:
(l to r)
Dwight (4606), Hans with Mark off his bow, and John Cawthorne (3654)
...

Peter and Annelies (300) look good as they near the starboard layline ahead of Roger Shepherd and Joanne who ...
...

... in turn are staying nicely ahead of Uncle Al and Marc Bennett (3854).
...

Peter and Annelies remain in fine upwind form.
...

Hans Gottschling and Pedro Santos keep a very good look-out as they near the starboard layline.
...

KIt Wallace and Anna Wharton come in on starboard.
...

Photographer Sid wasn't fast enough to capture Heider Funck and Tom Wharton who went left and rounded with a big lead. Meanwhile, John de Boer has overcome his abysmal start and will round second, closely followed by (l to r) Dwight, Mark, Doug Netherton (1366), Roger (7700) and another unidentified boat beside him.
...

Not a good first beat for Paul and Alan Laderoute (7380) and Uncle Al who round among the tail-enders. But many boats are bunched just ahead, so Marc and Al (3854) decided, even before rounding, that an early gybe would result not only in clearer air, but also in a strategic advantage (starboard) when the fleet re-converged near the leeward gate.
...

As Al sails off on the port gybe under Nick's boom (864),
the rest of the fleet remains on starboard, including Nick, Paul and Roger (7700).
...

Nick gybes to port behind Peter (300). Roger (7700) has also gybed to port but has already lost Al (red spi) who has gybed back so as not to get too far off the rhumbline. Al already has his beady little eyes on Mark Taylor (r) who is - at this point - Al's nearest series rival, and who is coming closer!
...

(l to r) the Roger - Al duel continues while the latter is patiently waiting to move up enough on Mark (7673) to be able to sail higher and faster and come out ahead of Mark's bow, preferably before the two-length zone around the mark, Hans (938) with Doug under his boom.
...

A running duel between Mike Codd and John Cawthorne (3654)
...

And another between Hans (nearer the camera and Nick
...

Ah! Here are Heider and Tom (6) looking great as they approach the gate in the lead with John de Boer right astern. Dwight (far left) continues to move well and will be nicely placed to get the inside track around the right-hand gate mark. Also doing nicely are Kit (1037) and Hans.
...

Still mainting a comfortable edge, the leaders (Heider and Tom) do a snappy but relaxed spinnaker douse,
well away from the pressures which will face a bunch of boats that will round almost together behind them.
