The 2004
Canadian Wayfarer Nationals |
Looks like
everyone's going for the right-hand gate mark with John de Boer (r) holding 2nd just ahead of Dwight (4606), Kit (1037) and Doug (1366). ... |
A nice rounding
for 2nd-place John and Dolores, and surprise, surprise
... ... |
... Uncle Al
roars up from way to leeward at the last minute to
sneak around in 3rd place. ... |
Dwight (4606)
rounds 4th while Kit (1037) demonstrates the situation
in which port gets buoy room on starboard - rounding
buoys to starboard off a run. The starboard boats are
still the right-of-way boats but their rights are
limited by rule 18
which says they must give room to round to any port
boat entitled to it due to overlap, etc. ... |
Of course, the
problem with Kit's approach was that he had to do a
virtual U-turn right around the mark. When this was
less than perfect, Doug (1366) cleverly sneaked inside
and is now nearly ahead of Kit. Above, the same
situation occurs again: Paul (7380) is entitled to
room - enough to make a seamanlike rounding and no
more! - from the starboard boat, Peter (300). ... |
Meanwhile,
Mark Taylor (l) has rounded the left gate, hoping that clear
air will make up for any distance disadvantage. Roger follows closely after a nice
rounding - which cannot be said for 938 who will have
to sail very well up a lot of this beat to try to
regain what he is giving away here to people such as
... ... |
... John
Cawthorne (3654). ... |
Mike Codd and
Kirk Iredale round the right-hand mark. Meanwhile, Al
(l) has tacked to protect his freshly gained advantage over main rival, Mark who is out of the picture - so to speak - off to leeward. ... |
A slight
cut-off shot of the race 5 winners ... ... |
... Heider
Funck and Tom Wharton as they ... ... |
... cross the
finish line with a comfortable lead. ... |
Uncle Al and
Marc ... ... |
... cruised
home in 2nd place, all but locking up the 2004
Canadian title. ... |
Mark and Paul
Taylor took 3rd ahead of ... ... |
... Dwight
Aplevich and Al Nichols. ... |
John and
Dolores de Boer managed to hold 5th ahead of Doug
Netherton with Roger Redwin (1366) and ... ... |
... Roger
Shepherd with Joanne Kumpf. ... |
Roger and Doug
cross the line in 6th. ... |
Kit Wallace and
Anna Wharton cross in 8th. ... |
9th will go to
Paul and Alan Laderoute - seen here off Peter Kozak's
bow - who will pass John Cawthorne (3654). Peter will hold 11th ahead of three real veterans ... ... |
... Nick
Seraphinoff (l), Mike Codd (under Hans'
boom) and Hans Gottschling (938). ... |
Although Peter
- under Hans' boom - did have some anxious moments. ... |
The Laderoutes
(7380) make their move on John Cawthorne and David
Weatherston (3654) as the finish line nears. ... |
John gybes to
port but will have to contend with Nick off his bow while Paul Laderoute has clear air and will beat John out at the line. ... |
It doesn't get
any closer than this as they cross the line - 7380
with the distinct advantage of being on starboard! ... |
Very close
behind and close together are Peter Kozak (300), Hans
Gottschling (938) and Mike Codd. ... |
Almost at the
line, it's Kozak by an eyelash over Codd with Hans
only a length back. How close were they at the finish? Well, the next photo, taken a couple of seconds after the boats finished ... ... |
... says it
all! ... |
Or perhaps this
beautiful shot! Note that even though he's on port,
John Cawthorne (3654) would be entitled to room from
from starboard tacker, Paul Laderoute (7380) if he had
established an inside overlap in time here. ... |
