The 2004
Canadian Wayfarer Nationals |
Well into the
last minute of the race 6 start sequence: Note how
Heider Funck (6), the eventual winner, has his main
competition bunched up to windward of him, as does
Uncle Al (3854) - except for Heider from whom Al is
currently nicely separated. ... |
A couple of
seconds later ... |
And they're
off! In trying to keep Mark Taylor (7673) from filling
the hole to leeward of him, Al has borne away a bit
far and is now closer to Heider (6) just to leeward of
him than he wanted to be. Kit Wallace (1037) got an
OCS out of this race. ... |
Both Heider (6)
and Al (just to windward) move off the line well, but
this will be a bad spot for Al since Heider has moved
extremely well in these conditions today, and will
eventually pull out into a safe leeward and "bury" Al. ... |
The winds have
increased to a good 12 knots, more in gusts - and
waves to match, as is demonstrated by Hans
Gottschling's Nutshell above. ... |
Doug Netherton
(1366) and Nick Seraphinoff (just to windward) are
moving well, as is John de Boer (7351). Looks like we all like the left side for the first beat. ... |
The beginning
of the end for Al (3854) as Heider (6) pinches him off
and ... ... |
... with Mark
Taylor (7673) blocking an escape to port tack, Al
(3854) is stuck for the moment. Both Hans Gottschling (938) and Paul Laderoute (7380) are in good shape and moving well. ... |
As Heider (6)
continues to outpoint everyone, Al (3854) finally has
room to tack away - and more importantly, to stay near
Mark Taylor, his only remaining series rival, who has
also tacked to port. ... |
Heider and Tom
in perfect upwind form, to leeward and ahead of Tim
Bider with Jon Banksam ... |
Roger and
Joanne (7700) are recovering nicely after a poor start
and begin to challenge John and Dolores (7351). ... |
Mike Codd and
Kirk Ireland (CAN 90) tack to starboard and follow
Peter Kozak (300) and Tim Bider (3613). ... |
Off to the
right side are Anne and Gary Armstrong who did not
sail yesterday and are out in a serious W race for the first time in years today. ... |
Not enough wind
for Mike and Kirk to hike yet ... |
After an ever
lonelier trip to the far left, Heider and Tom roll in
along the port lay line with a nice, well-earned lead. ... |
The trouble
with sailing a beauty like The Nutshell, is
that you constantly worry that someone will hit you
... ... |
... especially
when you're on port in a good breeze! ... |
Good upwind
form for The Nutshell here! ... |
The Taylor
brothers have pinched off Doug and Roger who are
tacking away. ... |
Only to
discover they are now in Uncle Al's wind shadow!! ... |
Peter Kozak
proceeds on port after crossing behind Uncle Al. ... |
A tack towards
the starboard lay line sees Al (3854) in 2nd place as
he crosses Kit and Anna in Ab faB. ... |
Dwight Aplevich
rounds in textbook fashion - with main well eased and
clear of the mark to help Eclairelle bear away, as Roger tacks after crossing John de Boer (7351). |
