The 2004 Canadian Wayfarer Nationals
Sunday: Race 6, part 2

photos by Adam Quinan and Sid Atkinson

The first run: Roger and Joanne have Invasion trucking nicely, but ...
...

... they have lots of catching up to do!
...

(l to r) Doug, John de Boer, Paul, Kit, Nick, Mark and Hans
...

Again, the racing down the run is close ...
...

... and exciting.
...

(l to r) Hans, Mark, Mike (CAN 90) and Peter Kozak fight over 3rd place.
...
Kirk and Mike ...
...

... have RED TOP in top form ...
...
... but have a long way to go to catch the leaders, Heider and Tom.
...

Paul and Alan Laderoute pursue Peter Kozak and Annelies Groen plus ...
...

... a few others: (l to r) Mark (7673), Hans (938) and Uncle Al (3854).
...

If Al and Marc (under Hans' 938 boom) can hold 2nd behind Heider (off Hans' bow) and stay ahead of the 4th-place Brothers T (7673), they will clinch the 2004 Canadians with a race to spare.
...

Pedro and Hans: looking relaxed and looking good!
...

Is that Mark's boom (l) challenging ...
...

... Peter and Annelies???
...

The fleet looks lovely as they approach the gate. Marc and Al continue to enjoy the spinnaker which Mike Mac donated to SHADES in 1992. Complete with sewed-on numbers, this was Mike's back-up in 1992 at Hayling Island where he and Simon Townsend won the Worlds. So long as Marc and Al can manage to hold off Mark and Paul Taylor (not visible above), they won't mind playing second fiddle to ...
...

... Heider and Tom who have rounded the left-hand gate mark in great style and with a good lead ...
...
... over Al and Marc.
...
Another lovely shot as Peter Kozak (300), Mark Taylor (7673) and Hans Gottschling (938)
prepare to take their battle over 3rd place through the gate.
...

And the bunch are close, too: (l to r) Dwight, Kit, Nick, Doug
...

Here, the Taylors have rounded 3rd inside of Peter who might have done better to do a wide and close rounding, with the more gradual turn allowing him to get that main in better, and to end up in a spot where he has some hope of pinching out over the boat ahead.
...
As SHADES (r) puts in a quick tack to port to stay between the competition and the next mark, Hans struggles with his main. On SHADES, Marc gets quickly tired of such slow trimming. What he does is quickly trim and cleat the jib to a close-reach position, the. hauls the main in rapidly hand-over-hand, gives it back to Al who has been free to concentrate on his steering during those two seconds. Then both main and jib get their fine-tuning for close-hauled sailing without horrid scenes like in the two photos above.
...

A quick kiss for the crew from Mike for spinnaker work well done, and RED TOP is ready for the second beat. Meanwhile the Armstrongs (l) enjoy a fast reach towards the gate.
