Race #2
course: 2 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 1 >
2 Winds: SW at 10 - 15 - 8 knots. Uncle
Al got off to a fine RC boat end start which permitted
him to play the left (west) shore as he and Peter Rahn
battled it out while holding a narrow edge over a
closely grouped fleet.

But Uncle Al rounds
first, coming in on port. There's a story here: A
close examination of Al's wake shows a major bearing
away just before Al nearly hits the mark. A puff had
blown his favourite sailing cap (30 years of SWS) off
just moments before and in trying to grab the cap, Al
grabbed the tiller instead and pulled violently to
windward. He recovered just in time to make this
rounding but the hat was a goner! (Or was it??? About
20 minutes after finishing the race, Al was
comfortably hove to and drifting past the race hut
when he recalled the lost hat. He and David tried to
guess the course a water-logged hat might have taken
in the previous hour or so, and slowly sailed a course
aimed at the half-way point between marks 1 and 2.
There! No, it's a twig - no, wait - halleluia! It was
my hat which went right back on Uncle Al's head, this
being a pretty hot afternoon!

Not a good race for Dwight Aplevich (4606) who is barely halfway up the second beat! .. |

At the finish, it was Uncle Al and Dave placing a comfortable first over Peter and Alex Rahn who took a very close 2nd over Jens and Sharon Biskaborn and Grant Town with Hazel Hewitt. A better placing in this race for the Brian Jeffs/Scott Bamford tandem who made a nice comeback to take 5th from Conestoga's Al Nichols with Mike Miethig. Robert Kennedy held 7th in front of John Goldi who in turn knocked off Dwight Aplevich. Michigander, Joe DeBrincat with pick-up crew, Chris Ramales, rounded out the top ten. |
