the June Bug Regatta * Race #2
photos by Kevin Biskaborn & Rick Goldt
Race #2 course: 2 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 1 > 2   Winds: SW at 10 - 15 - 8 knots. Uncle Al got off to a fine RC boat end start which permitted him to play the left (west) shore as he and Peter Rahn battled it out while holding a narrow edge over a closely grouped fleet.

Dart 2957 passes the RC boat on the way back from the dam.
Leading W's just starting the run to #1 in the distance.
..
They're coming closer!

Much less wind than in the previous picture. Uncle Al (orange, gray & white spi) holds narrow lead over
(l to r) Jens Biskaborn, Peter Rahn, Al Nichols and (off to the right) Brian Jeffs.

A puff hits.
..
Beat #2 (from #1 to #2): Uncle Al holds lead approaching #2 being chased
(l to r) Grant Town, Brian Jeffs, Peter Rahn and Jens Biskaborn.

3854 gets a starboard knock. Should we tack???
..
Not yet!
..
Jens with a juicy starboard lift - just when a big knock would do the most good since he's nearing the port tack layline.

Grant Town and Hazel Hewitt approach #2 ...

... on starboard.

But Uncle Al rounds first, coming in on port. There's a story here: A close examination of Al's wake shows a major bearing away just before Al nearly hits the mark. A puff had blown his favourite sailing cap (30 years of SWS) off just moments before and in trying to grab the cap, Al grabbed the tiller instead and pulled violently to windward. He recovered just in time to make this rounding but the hat was a goner! (Or was it??? About 20 minutes after finishing the race, Al was comfortably hove to and drifting past the race hut when he recalled the lost hat. He and David tried to guess the course a water-logged hat might have taken in the previous hour or so, and slowly sailed a course aimed at the half-way point between marks 1 and 2. There! No, it's a twig - no, wait - halleluia! It was my hat which went right back on Uncle Al's head, this being a pretty hot afternoon!

Close action at the end of beat #2
..
Uncle Al and Dave (above) briefly lost the lead to Peter Rahn when the latter sailed nearer the shore but ...
..
... got his own puffs to move into a narrow lead over Peter (5631) and Grant (hidden behind Jens, #7663).
Not a good race for Dwight Aplevich (4606) who is barely halfway up the second beat!
..
Robert and Scott Kennedy begin the second run as Len Macdougall nears the windward mark.
..
John and Joan Goldi (1320) wait for wind as Len (6732) and Joe DeBrincat (1115) duel in the distance.
..
Len trains his "new" crew, Peter Wilkins, in the fine art of the spinnaker...

... as Dwight and Pat Aplevich give chase. A typical Fanshawe scene: Keeping a good lookout is a must!
..
Steve Carroll (W6066) cruising to victory in the Laser division.
..
More Wayfarer connections as Brad Biskaborn (61007) placed 2nd in Lasers.
..
At the finish, it was Uncle Al and Dave placing a comfortable first over Peter and Alex Rahn who took a very close 2nd over Jens and Sharon Biskaborn and Grant Town with Hazel Hewitt. A better placing in this race for the Brian Jeffs/Scott Bamford tandem who made a nice comeback to take 5th from Conestoga's Al Nichols with Mike Miethig. Robert Kennedy held 7th in front of John Goldi who in turn knocked off Dwight Aplevich. Michigander, Joe DeBrincat with pick-up crew, Chris Ramales, rounded out the top ten.
