Race #3: 2 > 3
> B > 1 > 2 > 1 > 2 Winds: 18+ -
15 -10 knots SW. George Blanchard and Mike Codd
were the only ones to recognize and benefit from a major
back in the wind during the final pre-start seconds, and
crossed the line in great shape, closely pursued by
Grant Town. Winds were gusting to about 20 knots for
most of the first beat. It was catch-up time for both
Uncle Al and Dwight Aplevich who were the last two to
start. Both played the shifts well however, and had
moved back into contention by the time the first run
came along. A the top meanwhile, it was a great,
exciting race and Grant Town ended up rounding #3 just
ahead of Brian Jeffs, George Blanchard and Peter Rahn.
Uncle Al in fact, did
very well by doing what he'd seen Rick Goldt do in these
kinds of winds: he hugged the west shore and actually
moved into the lead just prior to the gybe at B. Here,
young Dave had his only hiccup of the series as he
allowed the spi sheet to go under the boat during a
last-second take-down prior to the close reach to #1. It
was one of those lucky weekends for Uncle Al however, as
the close reach made it impossible for Grant to get
through for just astern of Al even while the latter was
untying and repositioning his spinnaker.
Up the second beat, Al's
decision to go under the cliffs (left) cost him as Peter
Rahn made big gains up the middle and rounded onto the
second run with a narrow lead over Al and Brian Jeffs.

and fell to 5th place behind (l to r) George Blanchard, Al, Brian and Grant early on that run. .. |

After being down early
in the run, Peter Rahn (5631) rounded in 2nd, just one
boatlength astern of Uncle Al (3854). A tacking duel
of 8 to 10 tacks up the short final beat back to #2
ensued as both Peter and Al realized that a 3rd
straight race of Al over Peter would leave Peter with
little hope of passing Al in whatever races Sunday
might bring.

Talk about close racing! .. |

With Dave doing a great
job on the tacks, Al was able to in fact increase his
lead over Peter slightly. Here, Al is waiting for
Peter to tack towards the finish line. Al looks
nervously at the RC boat. He will wait for Peter to
tack and give him no chance to get lifted inside him
(like at the end of the previous beat!!!) Even if this
strategy means losing to Dwight who has gone far to
the left, the key to Al's series position is to secure
a 3rd straight win over Peter.

... and nails down his
third straight win while Peter pretty nails down the
series runner-up spot with his third consecutive
second. Dwight and Pat Aplevich, who looked for some
time to be in great shape on the left, got a header on
port tack, about 100 metres from the line and had to
settle for a fine 3rd just ahead of Grant Town who in
turn was just ahead of ...

But first a little
back in the wind which forces Jens to tack to cross
the line. No mistakes aboard 9235 who tack flawlessly
to cover and take 5th. Al Nichols and Mike Miethig
continued their fine sailing with a 7th over John
Goldi, while the George Blanchard/Mike Codd duo had
little luck after their fine start and first beat and
fell to 9th, just beating out Bob Frick.
