2003 June Bug Regatta
Sunday: Race 1, part 1
photos by Joanna & Al Schonborn
It was a warm, misty Sunday as the fleet headed north up the lake ...
..
... for the start of Sunday's first race.
..
And a lovely soft morning it was!
..
Grant Town and his RC provided a nice, water-based start.
Here the first fleet (cruisers and misc. centreboards) starts the first Sunday race.
..
Shortly after the start, the single-handed Mr. Pol starboards the Sonatina on its promotional tour.
..
A nice port tack lift ...
..
... as the Wayfarers, Lasers and Y-Flyers are about to start.
..
A fairly square line as the gun is about to go. Doug MacKenzie (Y2548) looking good at the "pin", as is Len Macdougall (W6732) further down the line. Eventual race winners, Jens and Sharon Biskaborn (far left, 7663) have been caught "barging" and are now waiting - as they should - for a gap so that, too, can start.
..
About 3 seconds after the start: Peter Rahn (286) gets underway at the pin. Laser 20791 is in bad shape - being backwinded by the Laser in front, and blankleted by the Y. W6732 seems to be delayed in getting his main in while W3571, Bob Kennedy, surprisingly has enough power in his sails to be hiking at a time when Len (6732) should be totally blocking his wind???
..
Another few seconds later: Len finally has his speed up in 6732 but Bob (3571) may already has made it through the danger zone of Len's direct wind shadow. Laser 20791 is wisely bearing off to try for clear air. Peter Rahn (286) and Y1760 are also well underway now.
..
This is what happens when you have "buoys to starboard". The two boats on port tack were more or less laying Mark A but the Tanzer 22 (1305) calls "Starboard" and ...
..
... the mess begins!
..
A few minutes into the race, W competition is still close: Jens (7663) has recovered from a poor start and is now virtually even with Peter (286) while port tacker, Bob Kennedy, will cross just a couple of lengths behind these two.
..
You go to all the trouble of raising kids and then the little ingrates sit on your wind! I believe Laser 61007 is Brad Biskaborn who is dead upwind of his parents in W7663 who are in a nose-to-nose struggle with Peter and Krista Rahn (286).
..
Peter has now tacked away and is waiting the the lift that Y2546 is getting!
..
Meanwhile, closer to shore, Bob Kennedy and Ravi Gupta (W3571) have picked up a nice breeze!
Quick! Who will have right of way if these two meet???
If you said Bob, you are right. Since both boats are on port, Bob who is sailing the more close-hauled course, is the leeward boat and V23 who is windward must keep clear.
..
The W leaders both look in fine form here as they sail into ...
..
... a progressive port tack knock.
..
Not quite close enough to call "Starboard" on the leaders are Len (6732) and Bob (3571)
who are still very much in the race, however!
