2003 June Bug Regatta
Sunday: Race 2, part 4

..
Two race leaders approach the second windward mark: Jens Biskaborn in Wayfarers and in Lasers, Steve Carroll.
..
Jens and Sharon start the run perfectly balanced.
..
Peter and Krista Rahn set the spi and are off in pursuit as Bob Kennedy gets set to round the windward mark.
Brad Biskaborn meanwhile, shows how it's done in Lasers.

..
Bob and Ravi round in 4th place, just behind a Y-Flyer, and close behind Peter and Len.
..
Peter is poised to trim the sheet and fill the chute as soon as Krista has added the pole.
..
The race over 2nd through 4th remains very tight ...
..
... with Peter leading Len by just a few lengths and ...
..
... Bob right there as well.
..
A little puff for Peter (286) ...
..
... now reaches Len (6732) as Peter and Krista prepare to ...
..
... gybe and cross Brad Biskaborn's transom. In the event, would this be a case of overtaking boat keep clear? Why (not)?
No. It's port-starboard - nothing more, nothing less. Here, the overtaking boat has right of way and boat being overtaken would have to keep clear.

..
Waiting for their turn in a puff are ...
..
... Bob Kennedy and Ravi Gupta.
..
Is there more wind in the middle? Those Darts are really moving well.
..
An interesting Rules situation as the closehauled Hobie cat converges with these three going downwind. If the Hobie and the Laser converge, the Laser will have to keep clear since the Hobie will be leeward boat. If the Laser and W286 converge, the Laser must keep clear under Rule 10 since W286 is on starboard and "overtaking boat keep clear" does not apply on opposite tacks. But if the Laser sails or alters course to keep clear, W286 is bound by 16.2 not to alter course such that the Laser must immediately alter course further to keep clear. If either of the W's converge with the Hobie, it is again a case of starboard-port but again, Rule 16.2 will apply.
..
Oops! The Hobie wasn't as close as I had thought. But the race over Wayfarer 2nd remains close.
..
And it's about to get ...
..
... closer. Peter (286) is on port and must keep clear of Len in 6732 (and of Bob in 3571!) Although Len is bound by Rule 16.2, not to alter course towards Peter in this situation, Peter would be wise to gybe in order to play it safe.
..
Peter does so - and the excitement continues!
With a starboard-hand rounding of Mark #6 coming up, Peter is well placed to get buoy room and regain 2nd place.
